The College’s annual Humanics in Action

Day when students, faculty, staff, and alumni unite for a day of concentrated community service, is appreciated by College neighbors, as is the sharing of College facilities by its nonprofit partners. Says Springfield Mayor Domenic J. Sarno, regularly on hand for College events, “President Flynn has been not only a great college president, but an impor- tant and respected leader in the city. He understands both economic development and the value of service and volunteerism. The city of Springfield is a better place because of Dick Flynn.” In 2009, Springfield College was named

The Community

“To be a part of, and not apart from the community” are words that President Flynn has said often and that students and faculty, neighbors, and community leaders know well. As familiar with community engage- ment ideology as with facilities planning, Flynn has promoted neighborhood involve- ment and collaboration with the city that bears the College’s name since his arrival. Through work with schools, city departments, surrounding neighborhoods, agencies, and hospitals, thousands of youth, families, and individuals in need are served each year by Springfield College students, faculty, and staff. “Dr. Flynn will truly be missed,” says ethel

Griffin, president of the old Hill neighbor hood Council and program manager for rebuilding Together in Springfield. “He has embraced— and shown his support to—the community. The old Hill and upper Hill councils and neigh- borhoods thank him for that.”
