1965 Art Petrosemolo photographed and wrote an article about the SS United States, an ocean liner that has been sitting sitting at Pier 82 in Philadelphia for 20 years. The future of the ship is unknown but, says Petrosemolo, its histori- cal value seems to be building in public interest. Petrosemolo’s article was picked up by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Some of his photographs have appeared in exhibits.

1963 Richard Hession’s letter sweater and class pin

1963 The class pin and varsity sweater of Richard Hession were recently returned to campus by his wife, Julie, who sent them with the following note:

Dear Class of 1963,

Congratulations on your 50th reunion. I have enclosed the letter sweater of my husband, Richard P. Hession, class of 1963. The pin on the sweater was given to me in 1963 by Richard as a sign of our commitment to each other. We married in 1965 and remained committed to one another for 47 years until his untimely death on October 17, 2012. He was looking forward to the 50th reunion and seeing all of his former classmates and fellow track members. Enjoy the reunion and kindly remember those who could not attend.

Sincerely, Julie Hession

1964 Joy (Raymond) Carey has two children, one living in Seattle, Wash., and the other in Forest Dale, Vt. She remarried in 1980

Along with the sweater and pin, which now reside in the Springfield College Archives and Special Collections, Julie delivered Richard’s $1,000 gift for his 50th class reunion, which he had put aside. She said, “Rich was looking forward to this reunion so very much. He gave me that pin at the Yankee Peddler in Holyoke. I still remember the dress I wore because I had an idea that this was to be special. We spent 50 years together and were married for 47. He loved coaching and teaching and he loved the school that made this life possible. I miss him with all my heart but I was the special person he chose to spend most of his life with and for that I am grateful. Rich still holds a record at Springfield in the hurdles and would remind me of this many times. I do hope that the reunion goes well and I thank you for giving Rich a chance to be part of it.”
