Strengthening the College’s partnership with the YMCA has led to the implementation of extensive program- ming advancements, including: an executive master’s program, a YMCA professional studies minor, and the YMCA Club. The Stitzer YMCA Center in Judd Gymnasia houses the national YMCA Hall of Fame, the College museum, the office of YMCA relations, and is the home office of the national Association of YMCA Professionals (AYP). “President Flynn has done a remarkable


job reconnecting Springfield College to the YMCA movement,” says Harry rock, director of the office of YMCA relations at the College. “He quickly grasped the significance of the historic relationship between the College and the Y and its importance in educating individ- uals for careers in the YMCA. The creation of the Stitzer YMCA Center has ensured the continued partnership in developing the future leadership of the YMCA movement.” Lending his leadership and commitment to


a number of community organizations, Flynn has served on the board of the Springfield Business Development Corporation, economic Development Council of Western Massachusetts, and the naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame; chaired the united

one often-overlooked aspect of Flynn’s efforts is the emphasis he placed on leadership development as an integral element of the curricular and cocurricular experiences at Springfield College. In his remarks to the first Faculty Institute he attended, Flynn said: “Springfield College is in a unique position to provide leadership development. I believe we can create and put in place a comprehensive student leadership development program, and it will serve this institution well. Such an effort will not detract from our Humanics philosophy; if anything, it will enhance it.” As a result, the College’s academic


development—including a full range of volunteer and mission opportunities. Among the latter is the AmeriCorps program, which combines service, leadership development, academic learning, and financial support.
