Food&drink HEADING
BoA Local Food Map/
Directory Update Have you seen the Local Food Map? The first poster has been displayed in BoA Town Council Office window since June 28 when Climate Friendly Bradford on Avon (CFB) and A Local Life were invited to give a presentation, on their shared initiative, to the Town Management Committee. A great deal of work and thought has gone into this project, so we are delighted that the feedback so far is that the map is looking very good and is seen as a valuable resource for the area. It aims to help local people, visitors and tourists know where local food is sold, or, served when eating out. It also enables businesses wishing to sell or use more locally produced food and drink, to find producers. The map is being revised and more businesses added. So far over 80 have registered – producers within 35 miles of BoA, and retailers, farm shops, pubs, restaurants, schools etc within 10 miles that sell or use local food. The poster has been displayed at various events in the area already. The Tourist Information Centre and Made in Bradford will also

be displaying a poster soon, after the next print out. The map will then be updated on a yearly basis.
As well as being good for job creation and the vibrancy of the local economy, local food and a much shorter food chain is generally considered to have considerable environmental benefits, with better accountability. With global energy and food shortages becoming an increasing issue, it is perhaps time to really value and respect what local farmers and growers can produce, and realize how important they are for future food security. Many are really focusing on producing food with a low carbon footprint. In addition to all that the local food and drink is delicious!
A large printout as a free fold-up copy of the food map is planned, with walks, and B&Bs that use local food, on the back. The intention is also to upgrade and update the BoA Local Food website to become an interactive companion site. These will proceed subject to sponsorship. Help us to celebrate and promote local food.
