CYCLING FEATURE

West of England’s most significant cycling events. This year, the event attracted over 1000 riders and was supported by over 50 local businesses including title sponsor Charles Stanley Direct. The event attracted teams from 28 different charities and used local suppliers for design, printing and technical assistance. The contribution from sponsors, partners, suppliers and volunteers ensured that Bike Bath 2013 was a great success and A Local Life was impressed with the excellent level of organisation shown throughout and strongly encourages readers to take part next year!

Ahead of the main rides, an evening was held where organisers and contributors were able to meet and discuss the events ahead. Sponsored by Bath Ales and hosted by Graze, a classy addition to Bath’s increasingly vibrant Southgate shopping area, it was the perfect warm-up for everyone involved behind the scenes.

ow in its second year Bike Bath 2013 is establishing itself as not only a “memorable cycling weekend” but also one of the South

Bike Bath launched on a Friday evening with Midsomer Madness, a 20 km off-road ride on the tracks and trails to the south of Bath. Cold beer and hot sausages at the Wheatsheaf pub in Combe Hay were well received by the hardy, off-road riders.

Saturday dawned, wet and blustery, but participants from as far away as Zurich and San Diego set off south towards Frome, Warminster and Salisbury Plain. Feed stations stocked with local cheeses, fruit juices, cakes, pies and other goodies were well received and the Yorkshire Regiment’s Warrior vehicle added an interesting feature at Sutton Veny. The Walled Garden at Mells, Red Lion at East Chisenbury and the Moulton Bicycle Factory in Bradford on Avon all provided warm welcomes and more food and refreshments for the cyclists.

The 20 mile ride to Bradford saw a 100% increase in the number of children riding in the event this year which is a very positive sign going forward, and much of their ride followed some of the wonderful cycle routes which we are so lucky to have in this part of the country.
