JUDGES’ THOUGHTS

“It is an honour to be involved in one of the industry’s most prestigious awards, which acknowledges and rewards excellence” Emma Wise, Judge and Chair of the Starpack Advisory Group

Tim is a staunch advocate of the Starpack awards programme and has been involved with the student programme since 2005 and more recently the industry awards. Tim has also sat as a judge for the WorldStar Student Awards. “There were some absolute brilliant stars in this year’s entries and they covered the spectrum of packaging from

‘green’ considerations through clever shelf-ready solutions and latest decoration technologies – it was so difficult to decide who should the winners be when they all had something special!” Tim Lynch, Packaging Design and Artwork Manager, Britvic Soft Drinks

“The standard of competition within each category remains high. Some really good packaging technology on show! The creativity and new ways of packaging product has moved up a level again”. Greg Alder, Senior Packaging Development Manager, Asda

David joined the panel of judge’s for the second year and brought his expertise to the forefront having 20 year’s plus experience tracking and analysing new product and packaging trends internationally. David Jago, Director of Innovation and Insight, Mintel

“Great to see some really strong entrants this year, with a few stand out ‘stars’. Some real innovations and great to see some sustainable solutions with real charm and a strong branded look and feel”. Simon Pendry, Creative Director, Blue Marlin

“It has been a privilege and a real pleasure to judge and also to sponsor an award for the first time. We need innovation in our industry and to encourage young students is essential to ensure that packaging plays its vital part in all our futures”. Chris Turner, Managing Director, PET Power

Clover has worked for manufacturers (Boots), retailers (Home Retail Group) and brands (Innocent), and immediately prior to Innocent she worked at the government agency WRAP where she consulted on the important role packaging can play in reducing waste. Clover originally trained and worked in product design before falling into packaging, and has never

looked back. Clover joins the judging panel for the first time. Clover Abbott, Packaging Technologist, Innocent Drinks

“It has been an honour and pleasure to be invited to judge Starpack 2013. To be able to give something back to the packaging industry is always an opportunity not to be missed, especially for such a creative and passionate industry. The standard of entries was extremely high and this made the judging process pleasurably difficult. I was inspired and

impressed by the innovation and in particular the thought that had gone into sustainable credentials and customer convenience, even for those packs not entered into those particular categories. Once again, the entrants and the packaging industry can hold their heads up high”. Dr Mark Caul, Technical Manager, Tesco

Antoinette has over 27 years packaging experience across disparate industries, and has previously worked for GlaxoSmithKline, (Pharmaceuticals), William Grant & Sons (Spirits) and Oriflame (Cosmetics & Toiletries) and considers herself to be a bit of a “packaging anorak”. Antoinette is a keen advocate of the Starpack Awards and a valuable member of the judging panel.

Antoinette Devine, Global Packaging Consultant, SAB Miller

“It’s always great to see innovation within the packaging industry which enables the entrants and associated company to create that ‘USP’. What was also encouraging from a judging perspective was the good use of materials and the integration of design and functionality of pack. Hopefully the deserved winners will wow

woo and win more business as a result of their great effort”. Alvan Beaton, Business Development Director, Benson Group

“The standard of entries that I have judged has been great. There have been some great designs and executions along with some innovative structural designs and use of materials. It’s a great honour for me to be asked to judge Starpack”. Craig Davids, Packaging Innovation Technologist, Boots
