Welcome
The judging of Starpack is always an exciting time and this year was no exception with over 160 entries and 11 judges assessing each entry. Diversity
and innovation were present in greater abundance this year. Now let me mention some of the winners.
In the Luxury and Giftware category Glendronach Whisky won with a stunning pack that oozed quality and that wow factor. No doubt the 45 year old whisky was pretty good too. Pack and Product Integration section
provided a well designed winner for Westland Lawn Treatment featuring a very effective closure from RPC which converted to a dispensing device. Another winner for RPC in the Structural Design Class was a double hinge closure for Barts ‘Spoonkler’ spices pack, providing optional product dispensing. For Technical Innovation the winning
choice was a Bostik Evostick stand up pouch for mastic style products – clever thinking outside the box. Some interesting POS entries this year including alternative and clever material choices. The pack that took the award of excellence was the Asda stackable unit, made in Correx, for soft toys display.

The Transit section covers a wide range
of entries from car parts and bulk distribution to lamp covers and electronic equipment. After much deliberation the Award of Excellence was given to Asda for their ‘Airpack Mirror’. The pack was so simple, an air blown heavy duty pouch/cover which passed a drop test easily. The Green Star Environment and Sustainability award went to a Kleenex Tissues carton that has been successfully reduced in size by clever engineering on the production line to compress the stack of tissues prior to cartonning. I have left to last the winner of the Graphic Design and Decoration category. This was a carton for Bacardi Bombay Sapphire Gin which promotes the product via a moving light display when the pack is lifted. This entry demonstrates electronics in packaging at its best which must have influenced the Judges to also declare this pack the “Superstar’ Thanks to our expert judges gathered from many sectors of the packaging world, thanks also to our sponsors and indeed the companies that sent in their entries. This year I managed to see only a few of the Student Starpack entries but was impressed by the ‘scissors’ packs, the Tango pack using an

outer ‘paper bag’ and the various Ribena packs. Invention was certainly much in evidence, as it always is, and hopefully one of the winners will progress in future years to take an ’Award of Excellence’ in the industry competition. The schools judges had an exceptionally difficult task this year as entries were of outstanding quality from the Stage 3, 4 and AS level students, so much so that the numbers of gold stars given showed an increase of 50% from last year. Well done to all those worthy winners!
Please all begin thinking about an entry next year and those who place their pack in the Worldstar competition, you have my wish for every success. Starpack entries from 2012 achieved 13 Worldstars out of the 12 that had entered. Well done UK packaging! Unfortunately my July commitments
prevent me from attending the awards ceremony in London. However I wish all the winners a memorable day.
