As someone who has recruited school leavers, graduates and post- graduates, I know how challenging it is to attract and select the right people. As the UK comes out of a double dip recession the factors that created talent shortages in the past will return.

places is increasing, there are now fewer 18 year olds due to the declining birth rate of the early noughties. Competition for talent is going to become fierce again. UK recruiters and suppliers have a deserved reputation for creating highly innovative solutions to spot, recruit and nurture talent.

AGR WELCOMES NEW CHIEF EXECUTIVE…

It’s of the utmost

importance to me that the organisation continues to deliver the services,

networks and content that enable you to successfully hire the best talent possible for your markets.

hen I attended my first AGR conference back in 2001 I never imagined I would one day become its Chief Executive. I’m excited, honoured and slightly daunted. Over the last 15 years Carl has built the AGR into a credible and powerful force for its members’ interests and he leaves a significant record of achievement to replicate.

The many good luck messages people sent through on my appointment reminded me how diverse the AGR membership is. My first objective through the coming weeks and months is to meet as many of you – recruiters, developers, suppliers and universities – as possible. The AGR only exists because it can add value to its members. It’s of the utmost importance to me that the organisation continues to deliver the services, networks and content that enable you to successfully hire the best talent possible for your markets. First and foremost the AGR will continue to promote and campaign on issues that are fundamental to your interests. As someone who has recruited school leavers, graduates and post-graduates, I know how challenging it is to attract and select the right people. As the UK comes out of a double dip recession the factors that created talent shortages in the past will return. Remember when 60% of recruiters reported unfilled vacancies in 2006? Projections show that there will be the same number of graduating students in 2020 as there are now. Just as the number of apprenticeship and school leaver programme

Issues of diversity and socially mobility are going to become more important in the coming years and our industry needs to work together to find effective strategies that improve the pool of available talent. Diversity is no longer just about Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Diversity is a cross-industry issue and the AGR is in a fantastic position to help by working on initiatives that make a real difference to hiring numbers. Talk to anyone in Higher Education and they will tell you of the significant changes sweeping through the system. Tuition fees are focusing Vice Chancellor’s minds on the employability needs of their current and future students as never before because they know prospective students consider career outcomes when choosing their university. Market forces in Higher Education are a reality. If you haven’t read Sir Tim Wilson’s review of business- university collaboration then look up his executive summary online. His excellent report, which many AGR members contributed to, highlights the real need for employers and educators to work together to improve the performance of UK plc. That more universities are becoming AGR members demonstrates the appetite for the two sectors to collaborate in ever more meaningful ways.

Globalisation is another buzz word that is fast becoming a real recruitment issue. Many of you work in global organisations that need graduates who can deliver in borderless environments across varied cultures. This is why the AGR was a key driver behind the first Global Recruiter Conference last autumn, and is building links with other associations to help you recruit people with a global mindset. All these are the challenges your Board, the Advisory Council, the AGR team and I are committed to tackling. My primary role is to add value to all of your organisations so it is important that I hear your views. You can get in touch with me through LinkedIn and Twitter (@isherwood456 or @AGRtweets) or just pick up the phone and give me a call.
