Involvement of hiring managers is key in order for advisers to understand what it is that they look for, and what makes a successful hire. This information can then be fed back to students.

While the STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) skills shortage is often discussed by those involved in HE and graduate recruitment, the publication of a new report in March (In the Balance: The STEM human capital crunch) gave commentators a new set of concerning statistics to consider. Focusing on the projected employment requirements in the STEM industries, the report found that the number of graduates studying STEM subjects needs to increase by 50% between now and 2020, in order to satisfy market demand.


The suggested ways in which to tackle the existing


shortfall, particularly the gender imbalance, are various. Here are a few of the ideas posted on Twitter:


#Traineeships


Although the name might sound familiar, ‘traineeship’ is in fact the latest buzzword in the early careers and FE landscape. First proposed by Nick Clegg in June 2012, traineeships are a proposed programme to help young people aged 16 to 24 to develop the skills they need to secure Apprenticeships and other sustainable employment.


Amid the official launch event in April, Twitter-users speculated about the likely impact the programme will have once it is launched in September 2014:

Tesco were recently awarded the ‘Best Use of Social Media’ prize at the TARGETjobs National Graduate Recruitment Awards 2013. Speaking at a Recruitment Society event in April, graduate resourcing manager, Vicki Spindler explained how the use of a Twitter hashtag,


#discovertesco, aided the recruitment team in dispelling the ‘corporate’ feel of the Tesco employer brand. Apple was voted second, followed by Google, who came third. The awards were voted for by students.
