A DECADE OF NCWE AWARDS
Since the last National Council for Work Experience (NCWE) Awards Mike Hill, Chief Executive of the Higher Education Careers Services Unit and Graduate Prospects, has been heartened by the many employers and industry leaders who expressed both regret and gratitude as they praised what has been an extremely successful run of events. Here he explains why…

The Awards are a dignified affair with serious players from the worlds of higher education and business coming together to celebrate everything that’s good in the UK when it comes to work experience. With more than 170 guests in attendance from more than 70 organisations, it was a thoroughly enjoyable and extremely well received day.
T
he NCWE Awards came to a close earlier this year and at the same time we celebrated their tenth
anniversary. For the past decade they have recognised and rewarded UK employers who provide exceptional internships to students and graduates, both here and abroad. During this period the world of work experience has transformed with standards reaching new heights. The NCWE Awards 2013 presentation took place at the elegant Merchant Taylors’ Hall in London. Steeped in history with grand surroundings and fantastic food and wine to boot, it provided the perfect spot to recognise industry commitment to internships. Global bank, Citi won the Graduate Internship of the
Year for Large Organisations title before being crowned overall winner from more than 60 finalists. The company’s 10 week programme offers opportunities to more than 200 graduates annually and the judges praised it for its remarkable focus on intern development, from job specific skills to wider commercial awareness. Making up the list of the UK’s best internship providers
were companies including BP, Fujitsu, Nabarro, Cancer Research UK and Infosys, as well as digital agency, Clock and charity, Change Agents UK. To mark the anniversary, the Best of the Best category was introduced for previous overall winners, and went to
George at Asda. The full list of finalists and winners can be found at
www.work-experience.org/awards with some appearing in this autumn’s Prospects Work Experience & Internships magazine. As we reflect on the NCWE Awards we can be encouraged by the fact that this isn’t the end of the road completely. We are now turning our attention to a new era of events with the launch of the Prospects Postgraduate Awards. We are long-established as the UK’s leading postgraduate education publisher and
prospects.ac.uk is home of the official postgraduate course database, which has become the first port of call for motivated students and graduates seeking information on further study options and equally the leading choice for postgraduate advertisers.
Placed at the heart of the postgraduate market, we are ideally positioned to lead a celebration of excellence and innovation in the postgraduate arena, guaranteeing partners and sponsors unrivalled access to potential postgraduate students and key contacts at higher education institutions.
Set to take place in November, the Prospects Postgraduate Awards has just launched and we are currently working with organisations that have an interest in the field to get involved. The eight categories recognise the most exciting developments in postgraduate education with best practice, originality and measurable results critical to demonstrating success. The Best Business Partner Award celebrates successful collaborations between employers and institutions working together to ensure postgraduate courses meet the needs of business. Judges will be looking for nominations from employers that demonstrate a cohesive and integrated approach to employability, bridging the gap between education and industry.
