WE’RE SETTING A NEW STANDARD

We’re excited to announce that we’re re-working the AGR Standard, with the aim of making it a must-have tool for all organisations and individuals in the graduate space.

First, The Smarty Train will conduct research into the competencies that are needed to excel in various Graduate Recruitment and Development roles. (Look out for their focus groups at Conference.) They’ll also consider how these competencies vary for entry, intermediate and advanced practitioners in our industry. Next, we’ll transform the research findings into a set of competency frameworks. These frameworks will connect with suggested training interventions and a wide range of other useful AGR resources. In short, we’ll be able to offer clarity around the skills you need in order to develop your career, and the resources you need to acquire and develop them. To find out more, keep an eye on GR or drop a line to our AGR Standard project champion, Claire Adams, at Claire.adams@agr.org.uk.

CAREERS STRATEGY

New on the agenda for this year’s AGR training calendar was our Early Careers Strategy session, a one-day workshop designed to give attendees the knowledge and tools required to establish, or improve their own early careers strategy. For those unable to attend the meeting, we have pulled together the following top tips, which were compiled with the help of those who participated.

1. It’s important in the first instance to understand why you need to recruit from the Early Careers pool at all.

2. Once you’ve understood who you want to attract, you should then design/ tailor your strategy to that brief.

3. Research the impact of your recruitment process on each group, don’t just use your graduate process.

4. You will need to think about how your programme(s) strategically align within the business.

5. Building a strong business case will be essential, but don’t be tempted to focus too heavily on ROI.

6. Educate and engage the business, especially line managers.

7. You should however track metrics in order to inform your decisions further down the line.

8. Really consider what to call your schemes and vacancies.

9. Ensure your message resonates with candidates – test it out with young people to make sure that you tick all the boxes.

10. Don’t be afraid to embrace technology!

11. However, be sure to keep processes and websites simple.

12. Be supportive to applicants throughout.

13. Develop life skills to help students prepare for the transition to work.

14. Consider blended learning.

15. Challenge the norm – does it work for a new generation?

If you are interested in learning more about early careers, please note that we are running nine sessions on the subject of ‘Changes in Education and Early Careers’ at this year’s Annual Conference.

Andrew Sharp has moved from E.ON, where he was their ‘Talent Resourcing Partner’, and has now

moved to MARS with his job title being ‘Future Talent Manager’. He will be heading up a review of Mars’s UK Future Talent Strategy in the areas of Employer Brand, Attraction, Selection and Assessment and Talent Development – with the ultimate aim of improving the proposition Mars offer to students.

Nicola Hart, who has worked for Sky for over three years, recently moved from a generalised HR role to head up the Future Talent team to help Sky progress their youth opportunities agenda, address long-term skills requirements and grow a pipeline of talent for future leadership. Before joining Sky, Nicola worked across a number of business sectors including commercial, professional services, media and retail.

James Crichton has joined the Talent Management Consultancy, a&dc from his previous role with GradWeb. As Business Development Manager he is now working with client partners seeking innovative assessment, development and talent management solutions.
