THE SECRET DIARY OF… A 20 YEAR OLD STUDENT

…but there is just something about the delicious smell of the BBQ wafting through my window and the gentle patter of flip flops outside that somehow equates to… sunbathing

Mona Tabarra, 20, is studying English Literature at the University of Bristol.

This summer spells the end for my university days. While I will be greatly saddened to leave what has been an

amazing three years in Bristol, I am excited by the prospect of embarking upon fresh challenges as I begin my search for employment. Over the past year I have tossed and

turned between a variety of career options, pursuing work experience in journalism and law. Before I settle down, I plan on taking a detour by completing an entirely different sort of work experience. This summer I am set to broaden my horizons by completing a seven week volunteering project in Uganda, constructing a water tank in a rural village and teaching in a local school. From this experience I hope to achieve a greater understanding of the international development sector, while gaining some valuable teaching skills and having a go at manual labour. This is also a fantastic opportunity to learn about a culture far removed from my own, as along with the other volunteers from my university we will be living within the host community.

Anna Pitts, 20, is studying English Language at the University of Sussex

Summer is round the corner and the idea of finally getting some sun after what feels like the longest winter ever is

very appealing! What isn’t so appealing is the rapidly approaching deadlines. Unfortunately I seem to have caught the ‘end of term procrastination bug’– a nasty condition where you have absolutely no inspiration to do anything other than book holidays and plan the colour scheme for your summer wardrobe. This means seminar prep and 9am lectures have fallen off my radar and I need to snap out of it pronto! Just because it isn’t sub-zero temperatures outside, doesn’t mean daydreaming is allowed. I constantly need to remind myself that I still have 70% of my modular assessments to complete in the next month, in the form of two hefty essays and a tummy-turning exam. The books need to be hit and the essay plans need to be drafted, but there is just something about the delicious smell of the BBQ wafting through my window and the gentle patter of flip flops outside that somehow equates to…sunbathing. Living so near the beach does not help either! However, I have come up with a compromise. Revising outside is my road to success- depriving myself of the sun just wasn’t an option, but then neither is failing my degree. So, sunglasses on, notepad in hand: I’ll be in the deckchair if anyone needs me.

Kate Samuelson, 20, is studying English Literature

at the University of Bristol.

As we approach the very end of the academic year, I find it amusing to read over

my past AGR entries and see how different I was at the start of the year to how I am now. In October, I was terrified about my

future and frustrated that I had nothing secure sorted for after graduation. This anger transcended into apathy around February-time, where I pointedly declared that I was no longer worried about my life, clearly denying how I was truly feeling. And now, I’m finally content. I have been offered a place at City University, on their Magazine Journalism MA course, and I begin at the end of September. Employment rates for City journalism graduates were 96% in 2011 and despite the current economic climate, it has remained high. I am excited about entering the next stage of my life, however I am terribly sad about leaving Bristol. Many of my friends are staying on and doing Masters there, or returning from their years abroad for their fourth year, so I definitely have a case of FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out). However, I know I will stay in touch with my nearest and dearest, and go and visit regularly. Bristol will always have a special place in my heart.
