Welcome 14
WELCOME S
ISSUE SEVENTY TWO: JUNE/JULY 2013
ummer 2013 marks something of a historic issue of Graduate Recruiter as we say farewell to Carl
Gilleard after 15 years at the helm of AGR, and welcome Stephen Isherwood into the post. We lead with Stephen’s own words on why he is “excited, honoured and slightly daunted” at becoming the Chief Executive of AGR, but why he is also very keen to meet with and interact with as many members as possible over the coming months (page 7). Welcome Stephen, and good luck! Of course it wouldn’t be fitting to give Carl a quiet send
off, so we also asked the AGR Board of Directors to share their abiding memories of Carl and the impact he has had on many of their own careers. As one Director comments, “He has helped to develop a generation of leaders who can take the industry forward” while another talks of how Carl inspired him “to develop into the field of graduate and school recruitment.” Variously described as a “diamond geezer” and a “one off”, one Director even pays tribute to Carl by quoting poetry (page 8)… With the legendary AGR Conference taking place in early July, we also look ahead to what this year’s event has in store, picking out some of the highlights in our Countdown to Conference on page 16, while the founders of the Spring Project take to the floor on page 15, talking about radical employability training, as well as how you can get involved in their free training day on Sunday July 7th 2013 at Celtic Manor, just before the Conference kicks off.
On page 12, Alasdair Grant, a member of the Deaf Professionals Network (DPN), joins us to discuss the lack
of members of the deaf community in senior positions after a decade of equality legislation – and why he wants to work closely with graduate recruiters to create better opportunities. As he concludes, he proposes to establish a deaf management training company to help deaf graduates survive in “such a competitive environment where their hearing peers have an advantage.” Nina Mott and Sarah Chapman, both Managing Consultants at Cubiks, also take time out to follow up their popular ‘Innovation in Online Selection’ seminar, offering a ‘Quick Guide’ to online selection, from choosing the right test to being mobile (page 6). And finally, at a time when apprenticeships are growing in popularity in England, David Way, Executive Director, National Apprenticeship Service, explains why there has never been a better time for businesses to get involved (page 14). Are you? Of course, there is more, from our chat with Miranda Davies on page 24, to an insight into Michelle Palin’s typical day on page 31, not to mention our three final year students closing their diaries for the last time as they enter the big wide world (page 25)...
Enjoy – and see you at Conference!
