CLEANING UP FOR SUCCESS

Ross Porter, of Pontllanfraith-based Lady Muck Cleaning, tells Business Quarter about the importance of getting the right cleaner for your business..

What specifi cally should you look for when hiring a cleaning company to clean your offi ces?

Look to use a reputable company. You need to know if the cleaning company will have comprehensive managerial support and a full understanding of the requirements and culture of your business. It is not just about cleaning of your offi ces, it is about adding value to your business and improving staff morale. Gone are the days of a man in a van turning up with a mop and bucket once a week.

Any cleaning company worth its salt should carry out an initial site visit and then provide your business with a detailed proposal which includes the frequency of the clean, equipment to be used.

What security measure should be taken when employing cleaners?

A good cleaning company will insist on the provision of uniformed staff. The uniform allows others in your workplace to identify the cleaners at all times. The cleaning company should be ensuring that their staff have the right to work in the UK and have also had a background check.

Should you ask for references and how should you follow up these references?

Just as you would seek references for a builder if he or she was going to build you an extension to your home, it is always benefi cial to fi nd out what other customers think of the cleaning company before you engage its services.

What should you usually expect to pay?

There are numerous cleaning companies out there operating in the South Wales area and there seems to be very little consistency in their charge rates. I have come across businesses

that are paying £15p/hr for offi ce cleaning. We charge a fi xed hourly rate of £10.95 and this includes all of the chemicals and equipment to do the job plus managerial support.

Should you sign up for a long term contract or ‘see how it goes’?

It is wise to try before you buy! Be wary of the cleaning company which tries to get your business to enter into a long-term contract for services at the outset.

What insurance cover should you have?

The cleaning company should have adequate Employers and Public Liability insurance, which would cover their cleaning staff while out on assignment. Your business will also have to play a part in ensuring that the cleaning operative works in a safe and healthy environment as it must do for your own staff.

What steps should a cleaning fi rm take to ensure that any bugs are not spread around the offi ce?

Virus outbreaks, such as the norovirus, are more common these days than ever before. One of the most popular aspects of our service is that we sanitise all telephones and keyboards, and this proves to be an affective tool in the reduction of the spreading of such viruses for our clients.

No cleaning company can offer a guarantee to prevent such viruses from affecting the staff in the workplace. If they could come up with the magic formula, then they would be rich I am sure!

How important from a business reputation and profi le point of view is it for the offi ce to be clean, tidy and presentable ?

Most business owners concentrate on innovative marketing strategies, unique product promotions,
