the resources to refurbish or reinvent their existing work environments, nevertheless, there are clearly an array of small changes that can contribute to positive change. Extending the colour palette in an offi ce beyond fi fty shades of beige, changing lightbulbs to ones that replicate daylight can be done economically. Encouraging employees to customize and personalize their working spaces has even been shown to impact on productivity and wellbeing.


There is no magic bullet, single


formula or rule book on designing spaces to enhance performance. Post occupancy evaluations often


show that the way in which buildings or spaces have been designed to be used is often radically different to the way in which the user ultimately interacts with the space. This is by no means a bad thing as an


effective environment is one where the users are given permission to personalise spaces. Spaces need to be fl exible and agile to suit different working styles and personal needs. Ultimately they need to put the employees at the centre of the process.
