individuals with unique health needs or to create hard-to-find medications and tradi- tional forms of treatment.”

In 2004, Ortiz became a certified and licensed clinical nutritionist through the International & American Associa- tions of Clinical Nutrition. “The certifica- tion gives me the ability to understand the chemistry of food, herbs and vitamins, and what they can do to start changing the pro- gramming of our genes,” he advises. Ortiz learned about the concept of nutrigenomics at a lecture by Dr. Jeffrey Bland, who showed how nutrients could modify or change the expression of genes through cells to create healthier cells. “Some genes, such as those that control

the color of your eyes, are not modifiable,” Ortiz clarifies, “but other genes can be turned on and off by information that washes over them to cause an expression. Therefore, the thousands of genes expressed in a particular cell deter- mine what that cell can do. Nutrients and molecules from food, good and bad, are the information packets. If we look at food as a drug, then that says it all.”

Ortiz integrates conventional medicine with comple- mentary nutrition, believing that diet, exercise and lifestyle modifications are the keys to a much healthier patient. “If I can get people to eat better, get rid of refined sugars and bad fats and change to a whole food and whole grain diet, then

that’s the biggest part of the battle,” he emphasizes. “Beyond food, I look at how herbs and homeopathy fit in.” Learning about other forms of an- cient medicine, such as Traditional Chi- nese Medicine and Ayurveda, a traditional health system from India, has given Ortiz a deeper and more informed approach to wellness that allows him to consider a broad variety of options for helping some- one heal and feel better. Atlas Drug and Nutrition also stocks several clinician-only lines of nutritional, herbal and homeopath- ic supplements, including the brands Stan- dard Process, Xymogen, Pure and Heel. One of the company’s specialties is bioidentical, or natural, hormone replace-

ment therapy (BHRT). It uses hormones that are identical on a molecular level to what the body produces in order to restore hormonal balance and decrease the unpleasant symptoms and diseases caused by hormone imbalances. Specific hormones used in BHRT include estrone, estradiol, progesterone (which are available both in FDA-approved manufactured products and as pharmacy-compounded products), testosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone.
