lot to get used to with a new training group, but he says everything is going well.
Gerald Phiri
“Training is going very well so far, we are still working on our general fitness and strength, but we're about to switch to some more sprint specific training. I also have a new coach. I'm now training in Florida with Lance Brauman who also coaches Tyson Gay (2nd fastest man of all time), so I'm just adjusting to a new program, which I believe will take me to the next level,” he said. Gerald has high goals for his first year of pro- fessional training: “My goals for the year are firstly to make the final of the 100 and 200m at the World Championships in August, and also I want to finally break the 10 second barrier, and hopefully do so several times this year.” The Zambian sprinter says training with Gay is a major benefit for him: “It's always good to train with people who have achieved your goals. I have the added benefit of watching Gay’s technique and I can continuously monitor my progress against him. Overall we have a very good training group with some other very fast athletes who have been helping me raise my game. “I believe my potential in both events is unknown at the moment and I'm excited to pursue both events and see where they lead me. My new training program has a lot more endurance work. I have a very good start because I'm strong, but I often fade towards the end of the race so we're working on making me a complete sprinter. But overall the amount of training and the intensity is much greater than I've done in the past,” he said. On the women’s side, Muriel Ahoure will be looking to get her first major champion- ships medal outdoors. Ahoure made it to the finals in the 100m and the 200m in the London Olympics, so a medal is within her reach. Well we will get more in-depth de- tails of her preparation in next month’s issue. Africans will of course dominate the distance world once again in most events, Ti- runesh Dibaba is the one to watch once again. Dibaba will be looking to win the dou- ble at 2013 World Athletics Championships in Moscow, but Vivian Cheruiyot will not give up her 5000m and 10000m gold medals to Dibaba easily. If anyone makes distance running entertaining for people who are not into it, it is Dibaba. Dibaba started the year with a great performance at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix by winning the 2-mile run, a distance short for her liking. At the same meet, Gerald Phiri won the 60m with a time on 6.67. The season looks very bright for the African talents. The 2013 World Athletics Champi- onships will be held in Moscow, Russia, August 10-18.
