The Backcountry News BCHC ~ Education 2 MEMBERS TO CO-CHAIR YOUTH COORDINATOR POSITION

First of all, let's all thank Karen Lopes for the wonderful job she did while chairing the Youth Coordinator position. She will definitely be missed.

We are happy to announce that 2 members have stepped up to handle this position. It will be our own BCHC Webmaster, Jacque Murphy & Cathy Andrews. Here is a bit of information about these 2 so you can get to know them a bit better.

MEET CATHY ANDREWS Growing up in the era of Roy Rogers, the Lone Ranger, Gene

Autry, the Cisco Kid, and many more western legends, I came by my love of horses at an early age. My family got our first horse

when I was

five, and by the time I was in high school, I was training horses professionally, green- breaking a new colt or filly every two weeks to pay for my own horse’s board. I was given my choice of the herd of 2-year-olds to train and use while working towards my Bachelor’s Degree at UC Davis, where I met my husband, Greg. To supplement the family income until our three boys were of school age, I worked for a magazine called the California Horse Review, as well as freelanced articles, and have been published around the world. One assignment for AAA’s Motorland magazine took me on a pack trip with the Rock Creek Pack Station, where I requested a mule mount, my first mule relationship. I learned emergency vet care in the wilderness, as well as leave no trace camping and how to tie a diamond hitch on that trip.

After earning two teaching credentials, one in elementary and another in special education, I taught school while raising our sons. I was a 4-H leader for many projects, including the horse and horse breeding projects. I also did mounted search and rescue with the sheriff’s department for 15 years.

Now that I am a grandparent and retired from teaching, I finally have time to participate with our Mother Lode Unit of

the BCH, where I am the Education Chair. I want to share the love of equines, back country, and preservation with the next generation--they are the future!

MEET JACQUE MURPHY

Born and raised in Bakersfield, CA, Jacque Murphy has always had a passion for horses. She enjoyed her time in FFA, where she developed her enthusiasm

Jacque now resides in Fortuna, CA and has been a member of the Redwood Unit since 2002.

horses and enjoys riding in the redwood forests and the Marble Mountains. She has a one year old son, whom she looks forward to spending many summers in the saddle with.

Jacque has been on the BCHC Education Steering Committee for a few years, as well as Rendezvous planning. She has recently taken over the BCHC webmaster position from Lisa Deas. Jacque looks forward to using the great start Karen Lopes has done with the youth program and working with Cathy Andrews in helping BCHC develop a more structured statewide youth program, creating a zeal for the backcountry in our younger members and seeing the youth membership increase.

Jacque has three for education.

served as the unit’s secretary, VP, education chair and as a board member, as well as their webmaster for several years.

She has

Winter 2013

As Jacque mentioned she also recently took over the job of BCHC Webmaster, taking the reigns from Lisa Deas. So it looks like she will have her hands full in 2013.

Let's all give them a great big welcome & thank you for stepping up to take over these important positions.
