The Backcountry News News You Can Use

ATTENTION UNIT HISTORIANS: This is a special request from BCHA as 2013 represents 40 years as an organization.

Happy New Year and best wishes for 2013. As you are aware, this year is the 40th anniversary of the creation of BCHA. With that in mind, I have two requests of you.

First: In the 2012 fall edition of our national newsletter I suggested that each state and their respective chapters do something in 2013 to commemorate our 40 year birthday. As directors from your state, please “beat the drum” for this and urge your membership units to plan some activity or event to celebrate these past 40 years.

Let me cite an example. I live in Wyoming and in 1990 we celebrated our 100th birthday as a state. One of the events was a wagon train. It was estimated that on the final day of the train, there were nearly 3000 people, 200 wagons, and 1800 horses and mules – the largest single column of people and animals since the Civil War. It was an event I shall never forget.

But whatever, large or small, participation in an equine activity will make this 40th anniversary meaningful.

Certainly I am not suggesting an event of that magnitude. So

please work with your chapters to promote some celebratory events.

Second: For the 2013 Fall Edition of our newsletter – the

final one for the year – plans are to feature a photo from each state depicting the spirit of BCHA in that state. Our editor needs photos from you within the next few months. Please go to work on this now and don’t wait until the last minute

Remember your old high school year book. For the kids who didn’t show, there was a blank space in the class photo section with the words “No photo available”. and be embarrassed by being a “no show”.

E-mail your photo – a single one is all we need – to Peg Greiwe or Sherry Jennings. [Address in the newsletter] Identify your photo with a short caption and if appropriate, the names of people. Example: “Sage Brush Chapter of Wyoming gathering cow chips for camp fire.”
