The Backcountry News Unit News We have continued working on Beauty Mountain Wilderness on the
BLM. The PCT Table Mountain Trail brushing project (on the PCT) was a three day project. Riverside County Conservation Agency and the Forestry Dept. has worked with us and allowed us to install multiple horse step-thru gates in our area including Cahuilla Mountain for the purpose of keeping motorized vehicles out of the wilderness.
MID VALLEY UNIT LUCKY CALENDARS
Winter 2013
Audrey & Stacy ~ Mission Creek pack out
We have been attending quarterly meetings with the Riverside Trail Committees regarding trails in our local area. We have also attended meetings conducted thru the Forestry Dept. (May Valley Trail Coalition) regarding multi-use on local trails to help solve issues. A member attended the Southeast (equestrian) trail builder conference in Kentucky. The State Parks had a focus group renew trail policies and Redshank was asked to represent the horseman from the south.
The “Day Late Dollar Short” obstacle challenge and Dutch oven cooking Event: We brought horses, (and mules) to practice skills on obstacles, practiced highline display and metal mule pack tying. We had some very yummy Dutch Oven Cooked Meals.
We had a packing demonstration at the Lake Riverside Estates where we showed our skills and discussed who we are as BCHC. We got new members! In the local community we have been working with the local Adopt-a-Highway program.
Our fundraisers included a treasure hunt ride and a poker ride. The treasure hunt ride had the committee out in the snow tagging trail and hiding treasures. The storm passed and the day of the ride was awesome and the Dutch oven cookin’ warmed our bellies. We had rides throughout the year which have included in the following areas: Coyote Canyon to Tule Springs, Eagle Rock on the PCT, Santa Margarita, and May Valley/ Apple Canyon as well as the Beauty Mountain Wilderness. We finished off our year with our Christmas ride. We had riders come out and sing Christmas carols as we rode thru our community. We had a decorated mule drawn wagon with passengers singing along. We had a toy and canned food drive in addition to a great potluck and gift exchange.
Our Redshank Riders Unit is hip deep in the Committee for the preparations for the Rendezvous for 2013. Cya there.
