Happy New Year, may the coming year bring y’all health, happiness and prosperity.

2013 will be a challenging year for some due to the current

budget issues

facing us all. If all BCHC members work locally to insure our continued access to public lands, we can retain safe access for ourselves and for future generations. We may need to

develop

with other trail Managers

partnerships user

groups to counter Public Land

desire

to close access to certain trails and lands, but we

can keep access and trails open if we are willing to “think outside the box” in some situations.

I am honored to serve as BCHC VP of Public Lands for 2013. I have been active in support of equestrian access to trails for 10+ years in the California State Horsemen’s Association, working in several dif- ferent capacities. I have also worked with California State Parks and have helped put on “conflict resolution clinics” at the California Trails and Greenways Conference, for the last seven years. As BCHC Sutter Buttes Unit President, I have worked with Lassen & Plumas National Forests and the PCTA to help keep relations between those entities and BCHC ongoing and positive in nature. The Sutter Buttes Unit is also working on the “Trails Classification” issue on trails in both the Lassen & Plumas National Forests. The SBU hopes to ride and document the condition of all trails classified as “Saddle & Pack Stock” trails in 2013 with the aid of GPS units with cameras.

As BCHC VP of Public Lands, I cannot be everywhere in California where they may be a problem and I am going to have to rely on BCHC members to contact me when and if there are any issues that may need to be addressed. Please contact me with any concerns or issues that members may have. I will try to do my best to address your individual concerns, and keep the BCHC Executive Board and BCHC Members aware of issues that may be of concern. Together, BCHC Members can be a positive influence to keep safe access to Public Lands in California
