Red Bull Culture Clash 2012 (One Sound will rise)
T
he 3rd annual Red Bull Culture Clash could prove to be the biggest soundclash the UK has ever seen! We’re talking
four different soundsystems and four different genres set up in four corners of Wembley Arena. Hosted by BBC Radio 1Xtra’s Tim Westwood and Gemma Cairney, the earth shaking bass lines around Wembley Arena came from participants - Reggae Roots and Culture sound system ‘Channel One’, East London Grime outfit ‘Boy Better Know’, ‘Annie Mac’ joined by ‘Magnetic Man’ and the diverse DJ’s/Producers ‘Major Lazer’ led by Diplo. We were there to see them compete against each other over four rounds of continuous dubplates, floor fillers and live PA’s, and we got more than we bargained for.
Round One - ‘No Elimination’ The opening round was all about the sounds winning over the packed out arena and getting the crowd on side early. The atmosphere was a cross between a concert and the Notting Hill Carnival – the crowd going crazy, screaming and shouting.
Round Two - ‘The Selector’ Rules: 1. No Special Guests 2. No dub plates. But we all know rules are there to be broken! Major Lazer brought out UK Dancehall artist Stylo G to perform his smash hit ‘Call Me A Yardie’ which had the arena skanking. It didn’t end there, Major Lazer ‘juggled’ Dancehall classics like they had just flown in from Jamaica - spinning anthems like ‘Sleng Teng’ and ‘Jamrock’ by Damian Marley. The war had truly
started now, Skepta, Wiley and the BBK collective performed as if it was their concert singing hit after hit. Their rendition of Mavado’s ‘Weh Dem Ah Do’ tore the roof off the arena leaving us wanting more, by this time It felt like a two horse race but my money was firmly on Major Lazer the worthy winners of round two.
