and we hired other vintage equipment to make the sound complete. The musicians we asked to play on the tracks were equally excited about the songs, which made for a great atmosphere in the studio and a great end result.
HM: What’s your favourite track off the EP?
My personal favourite is ‘Face the World Alone’, which was written when my co-writer and I were recording a jamming session, the whole song happened out of nowhere as if we were performing a song we already knew! A result of feeling really connected with the music and that moment I would say.
Haha. Not really, although I do like my waistbelts. I would say my style is definitely verging on vintage. I love funky vintage patterns and prints on things I wear and things I buy just generally.
HM: Ok let’s get back to your music and your EP ‘One Step Closer’ talk us through how the project came to be? My co-writer, Thomas Dibb and I, had been eager to record a soul EP that we could really get stuck into creatively. We started writing around October and by December we had the songs we wanted to record. The studio (Cottonmouth Studio) we recorded in was perfect. It had a 24-track tape machine
HM: ‘You Gotta Believe’ mixes the Motown sound with 80s rock guitar, are you all about blending genres to create your sound? 100%. I don’t think that decision was on purpose. I think it was more what the song needed. We wanted it to sound quite hectic and have a huge climax…having the massive dueling guitar solo was inevitable! ha
HM: If you could have any other talent in the world, what would it be?
I would be a stand up
comedian. I love it when people make me laugh but I’m not the best at actually telling jokes!
HM: We interviewed fellow Mancunian Daley a while back and he listed The Deaf Institute as one of his fave gig spots in Manchester, what’s yours? Yeah, The Deaf Institute is a really great venue, definitely one of my favourites too. I also love performing at The Band on the Wall.
HM: What about in London? I’ve played the AAA Archangel in Kensington quite a few times now and I love it there! It’s very intimate and charming.
HM: So where can we see you perform next? You can keep up to date with my upcoming gigs and other news on my website
