HULL INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME

The Careers and Employability Service has established a very successful internship programme aimed at local businesses based in and around the Hull and East Yorkshire (HEY) region.

Kristian Rumble, graduate employment manager who project manages the Hull Internship Programme, commented:

“We were lucky enough to secure extra funding to be able to support a programme of paid internships targeted at the small and medium sized business sectors. The programme is in its third year and to date has been extremely successful.”

The aim of the programme, under the banner of “attract talent,” is to encourage more business to look at the university as a vital source of human capital in which to recruit from. As a result many small business owners have been using the programme to ‘trial’ a student or graduate to see if they have the right fit and have got what it takes to work within their business.

“Across the Hull and East Yorkshire region, the public sector is the largest recruiter of graduates. Given current government policy, we’ve seen some sections of the public sector having to reduce the numbers of graduates they recruit each year. This poses real problems about how we retain graduates in the

HEY region, and schemes like the internship programme can help to mitigate against this by encouraging more private sector employers to take up the slack.”

The Hull Internship Programme aims to provide:

• Opportunities for students and graduates to gain relevant graduate level work experience

• To provide a balance of challenge versus learning

• To offer mentoring and support to interns

• Support employers new to graduate recruitment

• Opportunities for students and graduates to grow and expand their professional networks

The Programme is extremely student/graduate centred whilst at the same time offering a personalised service to employers and the feedback is testament to this; To date:

• 78% of employers were ‘very impressed’ with the interns work (the remainder said they were ‘happy’)

• 67% of the interns were retained by the employer on a permanent or temporary basis

• 100% of employers said that the intern had had a positive effect on their business

• 78% of interns said the internship helped them to identify career goals

• 93% of interns said that during the internship they had made useful contacts that may help them to achieve their career goals
