The scarecrow asked the Wizard of Oz for some brains, the lion asked for the courage to be fearless, and the tin man asked for a beating heart. The combination of these things is what it takes to make your way through university, and the months following your departure. You’ll need the intellect to make it through the education, the emotional intelligence to deal with diversity and relationships, courage to face the unknown, and a heart to keep you from turning into a cold and untouchable robot. You might be a Dorothy, making your way
toward the Emerald City just to return home, or you might be more of a Toto and be carried through the experience by someone else.
Three years feels like six months, and it’s possibly the quickest journey you’ll ever take. There is a field within psychology known as time perception, and a theory which suggests that people who live with a present perspective do not significantly believe that the actions which they take during this time will affect their lives in the future. All students carry this mentality to some extent during their university
