I came to start my own company I felt very confident that I had a good understanding of all the different areas within business.”
Sameer Hajee chose to study for his INSEAD MBA because he was looking for a career change. The Silicon Valley engineer says, “I wanted to reinvent myself.”
“I wanted to expand my scope of possibilities and after the MBA I was able to change industry, function and geographical location,” says Hajee, a Canadian national.
The founder and CEO of Nuru Energy, which developed the world’s first commercially available pedal generator to create an affordable off-grid electricity infrastructure for
local communities in Africa says the MBA helped him build a solid base of theoretical business knowledge and best practice. “I have drawn from that knowledge base in our business as we have started to grow as a start-up.”
Porto Business School MBA graduate, Carlos Palhares says he chose to study for an MBA as he felt some weakness in certain areas of his job and he wanted to learn more as a professional. He says he felt that the MBA offers a group of skills that when put together helped him finance his new project.
“The MBA was exactly what I was looking for as it helped me professionally. My biggest weakness was finance and I learnt how to
present a business plan and present to the banks and private equities.” AMBA’s Entrepreneurial Venture Award winner, Cathal Brady says choosing an accredited MBA is invaluable when seeking funding. “You invariably have to give investors details about yourself, about your academic and business achievements. Having an MBA from Michael Smurfit, is recognised immediately. The AMBA accreditation that Smurfit has gives it a brand, you don’t have to explain that you have an MBA from one of the top colleges, they recognise that.”
Brady shares a few tips for students considering an MBA.
“Think about what you want after your MBA and choose an MBA that will help you attain that. For example, if you want to set up your own business, look for an MBA that might specialise in that. If you want a corporate career, look for an MBA that will help you do that.
“Talk to current students and alumni to work out which would be best for you. And if you don't know what you want to do after the MBA, do it anyway - it will help you decide!”
