How far do you want to go in your career?
If you want a qualification that is challenging, rewarding and can lead to fantastic career opportunities, why not become an ICAEW Chartered Accountant? You don’t need a background in accountancy or to have studied a business-related subject at university to complete the ACA qualification. In fact, last year 50% of our ACA students came from non-business related degrees, like psychology, music and languages. It’s a career that can take you to any sector, in any organisation, anywhere in the world.
How to become an ICAEW Chartered Accountant
Becoming an ICAEW Chartered Accountant is straightforward – you train for and complete the ACA qualification as part of your job. The ACA is one of the most advanced learning and professional development programmes available. With training that delivers a combination of technical knowledge, professional skills and practical experience across accountancy, finance and business it’ll ensure you’ll always be in demand.
Earn while you learn
ACA training is a mixture of classroom learning and work experience with an ICAEW authorised training employer to build your accountancy, finance and business knowledge, professional skills and ethical understanding. Your employer will fund all of your training and you earn a competitive salary from day one. Salaries for ACA students and qualified ICAEW Chartered Accountants are on a par with those in banking or law, with typical graduate starting salaries up to £25,500 and many ACA students doubling their salary during training.
Routes to training
With more than 2,850 authorised training employers around the world, and over 6,000 ACA vacancies every year, there’ll be an ACA training vacancy just for you. From accountancy firms to retail organisations, financial institutions to airlines, or if you’d rather work in the public or not-for-profit sector, there are a whole variety of employers you can train with.
ACA entry requirements
Entry requirements differ across employers but as a guideline our suggested minimum entry requirements for the ACA qualification are; • Three GCSEs or equivalent (most employers expect A or B grades in Maths and English)
• Two A-levels, or their equivalents, in any subject. Many employers will be looking for a minimum of a 260–280 UCAS tariff score
• A first or 2:1 in any degree discipline

Joseph, Trainee Accountant, Clement Keys LLP Birmingham
“I work for Clement Keys LLP on the graduate training programme and I love the fact that it gives me variety in my day-to-day job. One day I am auditing for a PLC and the next I am preparing a set of accounts or working on pensions. I have even had the opportunity to work with the science museum in Birmingham.
For students considering a career in chartered accountancy, the ACA qualification is ideal as it does nothing but enhance your career and open up lots of opportunities for you.” Read Joseph’s full story >>
