IT INDUSTY VOTED UK’S BEST BY GRADUATES
It may be viewed as an industry for those happier with a hard drive than a host of friends, but the IT sector has been voted Britain’s most enjoyable by graduates.
Anonymous career review site The Job Crowd asked 3000 graduates in their first three years of employment to score their company on a range of criteria including responsibility, progression opportunities, colleague interaction, training, work-life balance and benefits.
IT topped the bill when it came to colleague interaction, and also scored particularly highly on work-life balance, benefits and compensation and company culture.
The results paint an upbeat image of the industry and may go some way to dispelling the stereotype of it being a more mundane sector to work in.
The findings are reinforced with computer giant Microsoft topping the overall list, scoring particularly highly on progression, culture and training.
Operational transformation experts Newton Europe came a close second followed by National Grid, FDM Group, The Co-operative Group and Sky. Channel 4, Barratt Developments, Waitrose and Kiln Group comprised the rest of the top 10.
One of those polled, who works for IBM, said: “ All the people I have met and worked with are so helpful and friendly, I have been given great opportunities since I started here and from day one I’ve felt like everyone really believes in me.”
Another of those quizzed added: “Mobile working means I have real flexible which works well if I have to wait at home for a parcel or even just to miss the traffic. There are also comprehensive benefits, everything from a share scheme to private medical care and a company car, I’m certainly well taken care of.”
Firms from 17 different industries were featured in the list with IT, accountancy, consultancy, banking, retail, law, engineering, transport
and media particularly well represented.
The list comprised a mixture of established multinationals and smaller employers, with an emphasis on the realities of the day to day graduate roles, rather than a prediction as to how they believed the role would be. This differs significantly from other graduate recruitment studies.
Keren Mitchell, co-founder of
TheJobCrowd.com said the results go some way to ditching the industry’s long-standing drab image. He said: “Careers in IT are perhaps traditionally seen as bit nerdy and boring but our results show this couldn’t be further from the truth.
