playing his musical genius in the studio; the Ikettes shaking their tailfeathers in those famous micro-mini skirts while Tina sings her heart out and show off her own million- dollar legs; a red hot (and quite hilarious) onstage skit between Ike and Tina onstage during a slow jam; a brief onstage clip of the great Ronnie Hawkins opening a show while the girls apply their makeup backstage; Tina doing a press interview; a backstage scene where we actually get a glimpse of Bob Gruen, his plethora of cameras hanging around his neck; a smoking Ike guitar solo - so many priceless moments captured in black and white.
Ike & Tina Turner On The Road 1971-72 (MVD)
In the early 1970’s, fame rock photogra- pher Bob Gruen and his wife Nadya toured with The Ike & Tina Turner Review. filming them both on and off stage. Available now for the first time, the film presents a close up look into the lives of a hard working band as well as the iconic couple at the helm of the ship.
While the sound quality (and the video) leaves quite a bit to be desired, there are so many “moments,” here, it is well worth a viewing. From rehearsals to “fly on the wall” moments like Tina in the kitchen cooking and talking with friends while the kids run around playing with the dog and the Grammy awards. Tina goes to town with her cast iron skillets while Nadya runs the camera. Among the footage are moments like Ike & Tina on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson; Tina explaining lyrics and rehearsing harmonies with the Ikettes; Ike Turner dis-
During a performance of “Proud Mary,” it all came back to me. The Ike & Tina Turner Review was one of the greatest show bands in all of rock and roll. It was 110 percent be given at all times, singing, dancing, and Ike leading the band with his always impressive guitar playing.
The package includes a liner note booklet with several of Gruen’s iconic images. As stated earlier, this is not a pro shot documen- tary. The film falls somewhere between aver- age and below average quality, but that didn’t stop me from thoroughly enjoying the ride. To quote Bob Gruen, “What’s Love Got To Do With It showed why Ike and Tina broke up. This film shows why they were together for twenty years before that.” I couldn’t have said it better myself.
