Janie L. Hendrix, it includes numerous examples of Jimi's handwritten lyrics, often scribbled on hotel stationery, as well as pho- tos of Jimi to accompany every song. Much of this material has never been seen before. Jimi Hendrix: The Ultimate Lyrics Book is an amazing look at the lyricist behind the songs, a songwriter whose words were just as amazing as his solos. A beautiful coffee table book.
And speaking of great books, Treasures of The Who ($45) is a fan’s wet dream. The book takes you on the journey with the band as they conquered the world: from small London clubs to Madison Square Garden, all the way to recognition as global rock gods. The text has been researched and written by Chris Welch, the legendary English journalist who was close to the band, and it is accompanied by images from many of the best contemporary photogra- phers. There are also removable facsimiles of stunning, super-rare
memorabilia from one of the biggest collec- tions around. The postcard from the sixties signed by the band is so realistic, it could be framed and look like the real deal. The book is loaded with these type of things, hand writ- ten notes on Holiday Inn stationary from Pete Townsend, stage passes, tickets, posters. Take my word for it, it’s awesome. The Rolling Stones are hotter than ever as they kick off their 50th anniversary tour. One of the coolest items to hit the shelves so far is the beautiful Charlie is my Darling, Ireland 1965, Limited Edition Super Deluxe Boxed Set. ($71.99 Amazon) It’s a brand new cut, meticulously restored and fully-realized ver- sion of the band’s first-ever, legendary, but
never released film. Shot during a quick tour of Ireland just weeks after “(I Can t Get No) Satisfaction” hit # 1 on the charts, The Rolling Stones Charlie is my Darling - Ireland 1965 is an intimate, behind-the- scenes diary of life on the road with the young Stones. It features the first profession- ally filmed concert performances of the band. The Super Deluxe Box Set includes both DVD and Blu-ray discs that incorporate the new 2012 version of the film as well as the direc- tor s cut and producer s cut, plus significant unseen additional performance and other footage shot in Dublin and Belfast in September of 1965, bonus content, two audio CDs, one of which is the film’s sound- track album and the other a compilation of thirteen live recordings the band made over the course of their 1965 UK tour. A 10-inch vinyl record of the live material is also part of the package, as well as a replica poster heralding the September 4, 1965 date they played in Belfast. Each box features one of over 200 Limited Edition numbered and
enlarged cells randomly inserted from the film. There is also a stunning 42 page Collector s Edition hardcover book. Pretty awesome.
For those of you who are big Southern Rock fans like myself, may I recommend a visit to the Southern Rock Society’s online store at
www.southernrocksociety.com. CDs, books, and much more.
Now, if none of these goodies appeal to you, I suppose you can always buy them a necktie or a scarf. But whatever you do, please, no fruitcake.
