KUDZOO Magazine’s Best Records of 2012

16by Michael Buffalo Smith

There was some mighty fine music hit- ting the streets this past year. Some of the best I have heard in a few years, to be honest. Listed below are the ten albums that most rocked our world here at KUDZOO

Magazine, along with the ten indie or DIY releases that rose to the top.

3. Thomas Wynn & The Believers Brothers & Sisters

Thomas and Olivia are the hottest brother and sister team since Donnie and Marie. Wait, strike that. There’s no Osmond at all here. One of my very favorite records of the year. Fresh, original.

4. Gov’t Mule The Georgia Bootleg Box Just amazing set of shows from the origi-

nal Mule. Brings a tear to my eye. Like many, I was a die hard fan of Allen Woody.

1. The Outlaws It’s About Pride Honestly, it has been years since I was blown away by a Southern Rock album the way this one hit me. Seriously, Henry Paul and the rest of the band tapped into the magic with Billy Crain and Chris Anderson carrying on the guitar tradition of Hughie Thomasson and Billy Jones with class, style and musical dexterity.

2. Tommy Talton Let’s Get Outta Here Speaking of magic. The former Cowboy guitar slinger released an absolutely amazing recording with horns, funk, second line, blues and oodles of soul.

5. Billy Crain Creole Shoes The only artist to appear twice in our top ten, Billy found time outside his Outlaws gig to record his second solo album. It is a true winner. Choice tracks: “John Lennon;” “Creole Shoes.”

6. Tedeschi Trucks Band Everybody’s Talkin’ Live

A brilliant live set featuring mostly songs from their Grammy Award winning 2011 debut, but with a few funky surprises tossed in.
