Dickens Bicentenary Celebrations. Medway will be celebrating the bicentenary of the birth of Charles Dickens, with a full calendar of events, at Eastgate House.


February 6-11. Dickens’ Childhood Years in Chatham & Rochester. Display will be open all week. Free event.


February 6. Reading from the works of Charles Dickens by a member of the Rochester & Chatham Dickens Fellowship, 11am. Free event.


February 7. Dickens & The Medway Towns. A talk on Charles Dickens’ childhood association with Chatham and Rochester given by John Knott, chairman of the Rochester & Chatham Dickens Fellowship, 9am and 11am. Free event.


February 8. A Dickens of a Cream Tea. Enjoy a delicious cream tea while listening to amusing readings from Dickens’ novels and music played on the new-fangled phonograph. Tickets £3. Starts at 2pm.


Snowdrop Trail Hever Castle & Gardens February 11 – 19


Enjoy an exhilarating walk in the magnificent castle gardens. Families are invited to wrap up warm and follow a Snowdrop Trail through the grounds. You will discover interesting facts about this symbolic little flower such as the origins of its name, its preferred habitat and the number of different species and varieties. Then join the Lady of the Wildwood, who delights young visitors with stories of spring and a fun workshop.


Longbow Archery Godinton House, Ashford February 11-12


The Longbows of Fraternity of Saint George visit Godinton House and its splendid estate. The Fraternity dates back to 1509 when it first received a yearly allowance from King Henry VIII. The Big Dig Leeds Castle February 11-19


Bring the children to Leeds Castle this half term for fun and discovery in the ‘Big Dig’ archaeology tent. Come and uncover interesting real Roman finds using


trowels to dig in large sandpits inside a marquee near the maze. The Kent Archaeological Society will be on hand to


discuss the artefacts uncovered and explain the history of the remains to the children. A local expert on flint will also be available for questions. The whole family will enjoy learning how to use metal detectors with guidance from the Kent Metal Detector Club. Entrance to the marquee is free but a valid Key to the


Castle entrance ticket to Leeds Castle is required. These are valid for 12 months.
