School leads way with new apprentices

A Maidstone school is one of the first in the county to recruit apprentices, thanks to a new partnership with MidKent College.

Invicta Grammar School, which specialises in business and enterprise, has taken on 18-year-olds Lois Berry and Debbie Jarvis on a business administration apprenticeship. The ambitious youngsters started their new jobs on Monday, December 5, which they will combine with their studies at MidKent College’s Maidstone campus. Invicta Grammar School’s assistant head Marelle Giles said: “We are delighted to have the opportunity to support students in a vocational approach to work. “Our business and enterprise status is all about encouraging our students to

be prepared for the world of work. As such, it is really pleasing to think we can raise awareness of the importance of apprenticeships for all.” MidKent College is approved by the Skills Funding Agency to offer both apprenticeships and advanced apprenticeships. The latter prepare young people to become the managers and technicians of tomorrow. The college currently offers 15 different apprenticeships covering a wide range of subject areas, and during February’s Apprenticeship Week, will launch a new course on information technology. MidKent College’s head of business

development, Jacqui Brown, said: “We are delighted to have formed this partnership with Invicta Grammar School and are pleased they are leading the way with their approach to apprenticeships. “At a time when competition for jobs is fierce, it is important our young people realise there is a vocational way forward and that the academic route is not always the answer for everyone.” www.midkent.ac.uk for more information.
