Love is in the air

A time to strengthen relationships

Valentine THE origin of Valentine's Day is shrouded in mystery but, according to legend, has its links with ancient Rome and early Christianity. In the UK, Valentine's Day became a popular celebration during the 17th and 18th centuries with the giving of small gifts and written notes. The oldest known Valentine's poem, written in 1415, can

be found in the British Library. It is also thought that King Henry V hired, a noteable writer of the time, to compose a valentine note to Catherine of Valois. Famous and best-loved valentine quotes penned by the

literary good and the great include: How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. - Elizabeth Barrett Browning Love is composed of a single soul inhabiting two bodies. - Aristotle Valentine's Day is now the second largest card-sending

event. These days, couples and lovers express their deepest emotions and declare their love for one another on February 14 by exchanging poems, cards, chocolates, flowers, jewellery and other intimate gifts or enjoying a romantic candlelit meal for two.

Marriage Week Marriage Week UK has launched its new website and resources ahead of Marriage Week 2012, which will run between February 7-14. Timed to coincide with Valentine’s Day, Marriage Week

has celebrated the vibrancy of healthy marriage as the basis for family life in the UK since 1997. Each year, hundreds of marriage champions across the country put on events to celebrate and strengthen marriages in their local area. In past years, events have taken the form of Valentine’s suppers, renewal of marriage vows in a local church and pub quizzes. Local organisers can register their event on the website www.marriage-week.org.uk, enabling others to search for local events in their area. The founder and director of Marriage Week, Richard

Kane said: “Marriage Week is about saying let’s wake up and get intentional about our marriages.” Marriage Week UK is part of Marriage Week International. There are currently expressions of Marriage Week in 15 countries.
