My Kent Big Weekend is getting bigger

Scores of visitor attractions and destinations across Kent and Medway are getting ready to give away thousands of free tickets to local residents for My Kent Big Weekend 2012.

The annual event organised by Visit Kent to

celebrate the county’s tourism, leisure and hospitality industry will be held on March 17 and 18.

Free tickets to castles, historic houses, animal

attractions, museums and a wide range of visitor experiences will be featured on the special event’s website at www.mykentbigweekend.co.uk from Monday, January 23.

Kent and Medway residents will be able to apply for

free tickets, two per household, which will be allocated on a ballot system after the website closes for applications on Monday, February 13.

For 2012, cross-Channel service providers Eurolines

and Eurotunnel will offer a number of Kent people the chance to visit attractions in France and vice versa.

“This year is going to be even more exciting. The

My Kent Big Weekend will be a great start to 2012 as we prepare to greet all our visitors soaking up the atmosphere of the London Games, enjoying the Cultural Olympiad, and exploring all our connections with Charles Dickens as part of the celebrations marking 200 years since his birth.”

Research last year revealed that 80 per cent of people who visited an attraction during the event would revisit it on another occasion while 98 per cent said they would recommend it to their friends and family.

Mrs Matthews-Marsh added: “From the start, My

Kent Big Weekend has been all about giving local people the chance to explore attractions for themselves – discovering new destinations and catching up with new developments at traditional favourites.

“Then, when

“Six years ago we launched the Kent Big Day Out,” said Sandra Matthews-March, chief executive at Visit Kent.

“Last year we spread our celebrations over two days

so even more people could take part, and received more than 51,000 applications for tickets.

“It is a tremendous showcase for all the attractions

and experiences Kent has to offer, going far beyond our iconic castles, cathedrals and historic houses to include many hidden gems such as art galleries, theatres, museums, sporting venues, creative experiences, hospitality venues and even the whole centre of a village.

we are entertaining friends and relatives or meeting visitors in our area, we will be so much better informed and able to tell them all about the places they can discover and enjoy during their stay. The research shows that we are achieving our goal.”
