SWEET TOMATO SAUCE
A sweet take on a traditional British classic, a pretty bottle and some ribbon will make this into a lovely Christmas gift and will be perfect to enjoy with those leftovers!
Makes 10–12 medium-sized jars or bottles 4 kg very ripe tomatoes 125g onion, diced 750g apples, cored and cut into cubes
750g sugar 185g salt 1 tbsp cayenne pepper 2 tsp allspice 1 tbsp ground cloves 65g garlic, peeled 4.5 litres vinegar

WHILE SWEETS AND SUGARY OFFERINGS MAY BE THE OBVIOUS CHOICE, THERE ARE PLENTY OF OTHER SIMPLE GIFT IDEAS AVAILABLE. THINK A LITTLE BIT OUTSIDE OF THE BOX AND EXPERIMENT; YOUR CHOSEN RECIPIENT WILL APPRECIATE IT!
1 Place all of the ingredients in a large saucepan or stockpot and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat to low and simmer uncovered, for 3–4 hours, stirring occasionally until the sauce has thickened.
2 Pour the sauce into sterilised jars or bottles with tight-fitting lids. The sauce is now ready to be used and can be stored for up to 1 year in a cool dry place.
3 Serve the sauce as you would any tomato sauce (ketchup).
