UBS brings a wealth of experience to the region
UBS Wealth Management is moving into the Thames Valley and Solent region, with the appointment of a dedicated team providing bespoke wealth management advice for high-net-worth individuals, writes The Business Magazine’s Alison Dewar
a “disenfranchised“ investor who has invested with other banks, but earned little reward in recent years.
For those new to wealth, he says education is a key part of UBS’s remit, helping them understand the processes, opportunities and responsibilities that come with acquiring financial success.
“If you have spent 20 years building your business and then sell it, it will take time to work through the emotions and decide what to do. Whether people want to leave money in trust for their children, sort out their pension arrangements or increasingly, do something worthwhile and become a philanthropist, we can help,“ he added.
Picking up his point, Scurlock-Davies said: “As a truly global provider, we can call on a lot of resources within UBS to provide bespoke solutions for our clients and that’s a key differentiator.
“We’re not driven by selling products – we listen to what clients want to achieve with their money and look at the best solutions for their individual needs. We focus purely on wealth management, which includes financial planning and working with other advisers such as accountants and tax advisers to structure the wealth in the right way. We have huge capability within UBS and see ourselves as facilitators opening doors to that expertise.“

Designed to advise clients with £2 plus million in liquid assets, this new team addresses the significant number of high-net-worth individuals who not only live in the region, but want to stay loyal to local professional advisers.
Emphasising its commitment to the importance of local contacts and area knowledge, UBS has recruited two well-known individuals as executive directors to manage client relationships.
Martyn Begbour, who heads up the south and South West region, is also responsible for managing client relationships in the Solent area and John Scurlock-Davies now covers Berkshire and Oxfordshire.
Both were formerly with Coutts. Begbour ran its Hampshire and Dorset operation and is well- connected among local business professionals throughout the region, while Scurlock-Davies returns to his former base in Reading following a period at Credit Suisse.
Begbour comments on the south of England as a hotbed of entrepreneurial activity with 30% of the Sunday Times Fast Track and Profit Track companies being based in the area. Scurlock- Davies also highlights Reading’s fast-growing economy, its high proportion of wealthy individuals, and the fact that at least 10 of the top 50 global companies are based in the
town, all contributing to the region being a key location for UBS.
Supporting Begbour and Scurlock-Davies will be a team of two assistants, while a third executive director, Lloyd Cossins-Price, will be based in Bristol.
“We recognise that when an individual has built their business, they will also have built a trusted network of professional advisers who has seen them through the process,“ said Begbour. “When the time comes to sell, very often they will turn to those same advisers for guidance on who to talk to about investing their money afterwards.
“They want advisers who can provide a London quality service, but they want it delivered by someone who lives and works in the area and can work collegiately with lawyers and accountants as part of the clients’ advisory team. We do exactly that.“
Part of UBS’s commitment to a bespoke service will see the number of clients per adviser generally restricted to 20-30, allowing plenty of time for the top-level personal attention and relationship building it considers so important.
Begbour believes there are two main types of client who will typically benefit from UBS’s support. The first will be an individual who is newly wealthy thanks to the sale of a successful business, while the second will be

UBS’s arrival into the regional marketplace has been welcomed by the professional services community and Begbour says the feedback has been “tremendous“.
In move which further underlines its local commitment, UBS has also just announced it will be a sponsor of the Thames Valley and Solent Deals Awards 2013.
UBS is proud to be a bank that is recognised as a class leader by its peers and experts across the world and it has won numerous awards, including “best global wealth manager and best for high net worth in the UK“ and was voted “No 1 for high net worth ($10m – $30m)“ in the Euromoney 2012 awards. It also won What Investment’s “best discretionary wealth manager“ for 2011.
