Bandits beware!

F you’re a Berwick rider, you might feel like staying at home in the future.

In an incredible 13-day spell, the Bandits have lost Alex Edberg (ankle and collarbone), Jason King (arm), Sebastian Alden (hand) and skipper Lee Complin (collarbone) to broken bones.

And the last two injury blows came in successive away nights at Ipswich and Scunthorpe. “It’s just been a horrendous time for us,” admitted manager Ian Rae. “Seb has been for x-rays and has two broken bones of his right hand. He is strapped up and will not be able to ride for two or three weeks. “Lee has a broken collarbone and is definitely out for a month at least.”

OME Norwich legends have added their weight to the bid to bring speedway back to the Norfolk city. Ove Fundin, Olle Nygren, Terry Betts and Trevor Hedge all attended last week’s official press conference launch. Interestingly, Buster and Jonathan Chapman of ‘neighbouring’ King’s Lynn were also there on behalf of the BSPA, but there was no suggestion they were about to contest the application. Five-time World Champion Ove Fundin said: “To be honest, I was a bit sceptical when I first got the call about these new plans. I’ve heard reports about attempts to bring speedway back to Norwich so many times before – almost since the day it closed in 1964. But after coming here, seeing it and meeting Mr. Ribbons and his partners, I am sure that something will come of it this time.”

Businessman Steve Ribbons, the man behind the bid, accepts there are still a few hurdles to clear yet, but the mood of the conference was upbeat.
