Welcome

It’s that time again when I am dazzled by the diversity of the packs entered into the Starpack competition. This year I was able to attend the judging day in

May atGranthamandmuch enjoyed viewing and handling the various entries. This year we havemodified our rules and will

provide ‘Awards of Excellence’ at our ceremony replacing the previous systemof Gold, Silver and Bronze.During the judging day our Judges decided on 20 ‘Awards of Excellence’ and 26 ‘Highly Commended’. The new look Awards ceremony will also allow Student Starpack winners tomingle and network with the Industry leaders. Aftermuch debate at the end of the judging

day it was agreed that the ‘Superstar” winner for 2012 was the fabric softener pack for Vernyl, produced byHenkel and entered by Fuji Film, for its clever shrink sleeving technology allowing for an ‘after shrink’ cut out over the bottle hand hold area. In the Structural category the overall winner

was the Lion Bar Easter Egg carton from Nestlé. Clever cardboard engineering has created a realistic ‘lion’ display and yet did not go ‘over the top’, a criticismfrequently aimed at

the specialist Eastermarket. For Luxury andGift packaging the accolade

went to the superb collation pack for 4 bottles of Taittinger Champagne, well housed in connected hinged boxes that folded to create a square top section. This was held together via a box style lid with two openings to accommodate carrying cords – luxury all round. These are but four of the winners all detailed

in this booklet produced byMediaOne Communications Ltd with our grateful thanks. Imust also thank all our Sponsors and the myriad helpers thatmade this event possible. Of particular note, as always, is Rachel Brooks whose life would not be the same without Starpack. Verymany thanks for your tireless effort in organizing the whole activity. Sadly we lost the Competitions Chairman who had to resign last year, but I amso pleased to welcome EmmaWise to that position and thank her for her contribution over the past few hecticmonths. It was interesting to see the Student and

Schools Starpack winners on show atGrantham and I was drawn to theGold award entries from Lahti Institute of Design in Finland for the Kyocera Ceramic knife pack and the Refresh Festival wash pack fromSheffieldHallam

University. It is fascinating to see these entries produced by youngsters uncluttered by our many industrial constraints.Maybe one of these could create a future Superstar award. Finally letme remind you that the Starpack

winners are eligible to enterWorldStar and I heartily encourage them. Last year theWinner was the ‘Orbit’ easy open closure fromCrown which received aGoldWorldStar and has just been announced as the President’sGold award winner, the highest accolade for packaging. This year it could be you. Alas due to other commitments I cannot join

you today to celebrate all that is good in packaging, but I do hope you have an enjoyable day and please do enter those new packs, now in the pipeline, into the 2013 Starpack awards. Good luck .
