7 Ways to Celebrate

Self-Care By Jennifer Alhasa

Nurturing others comes oh so naturally to women. So, too, does the tendency to overlook our own wants, needs and desires in the pro- cess. While this makes us steadfast friends, dependable partners (in love and business) and amazing mothers, it can wear us out! We may start to harbor resentments, put off our self- care and damage our health in the process. I know I’ve been there.

My own self-care got so neglected that I was diagnosed with Advanced Breast Cancer at the age of 34. Now, 8 years later, my physical, mental, spiritual and emotional needs are my top priority! With all of life’s to-dos, you might be asking, “how is that possible?”

Here are 7 ways I’ve found to celebrate self-care!

1) Say “YES” to you!

Your time is too precious to keep “shoulding” yourself into doing things you don’t want to! Look at your schedule and see what (& who!) you can loving let go of in your life. Guilt is a heavy burden that weighs us down and we serve no one - espe- cially ourselves - when we do things because they are expected of us. While it takes practice to speak your truth with love, the freedom you’ll find is priceless! People will respect your time and boundaries much more when you do first!

2) Follow Your Joy!

Now more than ever, it’s time to prioritize bliss and let your spirit soar. Take a class, book a trip, or set aside an hour a day to do something that you love, truly, madly and deeply! Dance, sing, paint, act, write or grow your garden of happiness. Joy is life’s way of saying, “You’re on the right track” and “Keep going this way!” While it might not feel like it some- times, we’re here to have fun and feel good! Follow your joy and get more of what you love in return!
