Gemma Tattersall claims the inaugural CCI** title
at Balcarres The inaugural Balcarres International Horse Trials, (June 14-17), at Colinsburgh, Fife, was hailed a success despite the weather, writes Liz Daniels.
Competitors and spectators from all over the UK braved the Scottish summer to watch Gemma Tattersall riding Mr Philip and Miss Iona Kerr’s Artic Soul claim the first Albert Bartlett CCI** title with local rider, Wills Oakden in second place. Gemma was in close contention from the start, finishing just 0.1 penalty behind Olivia Wilmot and own Zebedee De Foja after dressage, with a score of 42,1.Time penalties on the cross country course influenced the order, with Olivia adding 4.8 time penalties while Gemma added 2.8. With just 2 penalties to add to his dressage score of 47.6, Wills went into the show jumping in contention for the top spot. With the show jumping in reverse order adding extra pressure, Wills’ one fence down on Debbie Whalley’s Merikano meant he retained third place. An unfortunate five down saw Olivia drop from second into sixth and Wills moved up the final order. Having already jumped clear on her other CCI** ride Tropique, Gemma once again kept her cool to jump clear inside the time confirming her CCI** win. A delighted Gemma said, “I’ve only had the ride on him [Artic Soul], since November and I have struck up a fantastic partnership with him. The going on the cross country meant that he had to dig deep, but the course was fantastic and very educational for young horses. Yesterday [Saturday], I went to warm up on my Novice horse and my Mum found a four leaf clover – I’ve carried it in my pocket since.”.
Wills Oakden said, “Merikano gave me a super ride, he has been brilliant all week. A big thank you to his owner Debbie for letting me ride him. It is a lovely event; shame about the weather, but serious credit to the team for keeping it running.” The Adam & Company CCI* saw an equally exciting climax with less than a fence separating the top three. Matthew Wright riding Jane Phillpott’s 10 year old gelding Shannondale Shinawil went into the show jumping on his dressage score of 43.4, with Julia Dungworth riding Michael Dungworth’s Limerick Light III just 0.3 penalties behind. Two fences down for Julia put her down to fifth, giving Matthew a fence in hand. Emily Ryder on Georgie Burns’ Miss Repertoire climbed into second after a fabulous clear to finish on her dressage score of 49.9, and Wills Oakden, riding Sarah Dudgeon’s Zipilo, who also finished on his dressage score of 50.2, climbed from sixth into third.
A fence down in the show jumping made for a nail biting round, but Matthew kept his cool and retained the top spot finishing on 47.4, “I am delighted” said Matthew, “I thought that he [Shannondale Shinwal] might struggle with the ground but he loved the course. It is lovely for Jane who owns him;

she enjoys him and has a lot of fun with him.” A delighted17 year old Emily Ryder was also awarded the Market Trend Memorial Trophy, for the best placed u21. “She [Miss Repertoire] has not enjoyed the ground at recent events, but she really seemed to like it in the show jumping today” commented Pitlochry based Emily who left school at Christmas to persue her Eventing career.
Organiser James Oakden said, “I am absolutely delighted with the way that the event has run. I am disappointed with the weather but we have had some very positive feedback from all involved and we are now planning and looking forward to next year.”
Despite the weather three novice sections also ran on Saturday. The KBIS ONu18 saw Rosie Williams on Jaffna lose her dressage advantage with three showjumps down, allowing Rachael Aiton on Hughie II to claim the win. The National Saddle Centre Novice went to Alice Spence riding Here’s Herbie, while the Scottish Field Novice was won by Tuffy Tilley riding Onwards and Upwards II. For safety reasons the BE90 and BE100 classes had to be cancelled on Sunday. In addition to the eventing British Showjumping and Working Hunter classes ran throughout the event. Visit
