A Grand National for Bedmax

Bedmax shavings is to sponsor the Shetland Pony Grand National Qualifier at this year’s Glendale Show near Wooler in Northumberland, the first time that this unique equine event has been held in Northumberland. The Shetland Pony Grand National is a hugely exciting spectator event, which sees around 20 tiny Shetland ponies and their riders zooming around a racetrack jumping small steeplechase like fences, all trying to win a place at the final to be held at Olympia in December. Bedmax’s Northumberland production plant is located within the Glendale area and Tim Smalley, Managing Director of Bedmax Shavings, who attends the show himself every year, explains why the company was keen to offer its support: “I was delighted to hear that the organisers have secured such an exciting main ring event. It looks like a wonderful competition and will be a highlight of the show.” Did you know………. Shetland Ponies are a breed originating in the Shetland Isles. At full height they may stand between 28 and 42 inches high. Despite their small size, Shetland’s are considered a strong breed. Seeing them flying over fences and zipping across the finish line with their smaller than usual jockeys, is surely set to be an unmissable spectacle. The Glendale Show, one of the largest shows in Northumberland will be held this year on Bank Holiday, Monday August 27.

OI win for Claire at Hexham

Claire Paisley and Lowmoor Brooklyn achieved the only double clear round to win the Open Intermediate class at Hexham One Day event, supported this year by CI Accountancy. Owned by John & Anne Collier from Blackdyke Farm Riding & Competition Centre, Lowmoor Brooklyn and Claire secured top honours by the narrowest of margins, just 0.3 of a penalty, on a day when the sticky ground in the show jumping arena and a bold cross country

track played to the gelding’s strength – his jumping ability. Second place went to Sarah Bowe and Sarah Higgins’ Pipe Band The Under 21 Open Intermediate was closely contested and just over 1 penalty divided the top three, with Emily Ryder and Zippo coming out on top to hopefully catch the eye of the selectors. In the Intermediate, Nicola Rooke recorded her first win at the level with Foreign Encounter.
