Eastlands Hollybrae and the amazing matches in his bloodlines by Val Williams

This article is to discuss the way old bloodlines can form a pattern of good matches in breeding. The young Class 1 Connemara stallion Eastlands Hollybrae who stands with us here at Glenwood Stud in Northumberland, is a good example of how this can form a web of interesting and wonderful bloodlines.

Firstly he has the link between Eastlands and Glenwood Stud. His dam, the renowned mare Eastlands Burniebrae, was champion at Royal Dublin, Royal Highland, Royal show, Northern Connemara show, Dumfries Show and Supreme Champion at the Great Yorkshire and Clifden. He is the third match of five between Burnie and the class 1 stallion Rosenaharley Laughris, his sire, who also stood in Ireland for a period, along with having a very successful dressage career, competing on young rider teams and gaining points at elementary level dressage; he also stands at Glenwood Stud. They are all bred by AI and Katiebrae is the youngest of the brood. As a pair, she and her dam qualified for the All Ireland Broodmare Championship, finishing a creditable fifth out of 34 entries in the final. Along with Atlantic Swirl, such a famous stallion of his time, the progeny of them have bred many top prizewinners and two stallion sons so it’s safe to say they have been a good match. Of Laughris’ three full sisters, Rosenaharley Laura Beth won Royal Dublin in hand and was second ridden. Laura Amy qualified for Olympia, RIHS and HOYS and Laura Peg qualified for Olympia twice.

The dam of Burnie is Bardsey Trinket, who the Staveley family of the Eastlands Stud from Eskdalemuir sadly lost last year at twenty five, leaving her five week old daughter motherless, but the wee one survived despite being a very late foal. Trinket was a legend in the connemara world being bred on Bardsey Island and being a champion herself, (and a Dublin prize winner); she went on to breed sixteen foals with Lockinge Frederick and the wins and championships of the progeny of the pair are too many to list here. The sire of Trinket was Whitwell Cockade (who also sired Bardsey Zodiac)

Connemara

Freddie Fawcett did the Connemara Breed very proud indeed at the recent Bishop Burton BE One Day Event. Freddie is very keen on his eventing and due to move up to senior school in September. Bishop Burton was Freddie’s second BE90 event and the only one on a pony in the 43-strong section! He was rather too fast across country and ended on the same score as others, but they were closer to the optimum time. Freddie and his pony Gentle Aberlow Dawn did a reasonable dressage and were double clear show jumping and cross country, securing them 9th place. He has been riding Gentle Aberlow Dawn (Laerkins Cascade Dawn out of Newtown Sophie), bred in Connemara by John McLoughlin, for nearly three years.

and great grandsire of Skellorn Harrison, so with theses good ponies surrounding Trinket and her triumphant sixteen matches with Fredrick, producing champions at all major events including, American Connemara pony of the year, Class 1 stallion standing in Ireland, finalist in the HOYS, flat ridden, winner flat ridden RIHS, to name a few, it is again safe to say they were also a very successful match. The interesting thing for a breeder is that the British Connemara In- hand premium gave warning of the potential of this pairing, as they and their parents all gained a premium, as has Burniebrae. The dam of Laughris is Rosenharley Laurin who was a most amazing mare gaining a super premium, supreme champion at the breed show twice, reserve and champion at Olympia and was only beaten by two ponies in her life under saddle. Her match with Swirl was amazing, so much so there was an obituary to them both on the same page in the ‘Connemara Chronicle 2004’ in which it explains they bred four foals between them, two of which went to Olympia and another,

Laughris a Class 1 stallion. The fourth won and was second at Royal Dublin Show, so definitely safe to say Laurin and Swirl were a brilliant match. Eastlands Hollybrae is being broken at present and will shown under saddle; however it would be truly amazing for him to follow in the footsteps of his sire Laughris and along side showing under saddle and in hand, do some dressage and working hunter classes, at which his sire excelled. Big boots to fill, but he is young enough at four and will not be rushed. He has already started his showing career and done extremely well and we at Glenwood Stud feel so privileged to have a young stallion with this unbelievably illustrious history behind him and such iconic ponies within his bloodlines that in their own way have contributed to the wonderful Connemara breeding/pony we know today. Delving back through the bloodlines and history of the connemara breed is so fascinating, especially when choosing a stallion for your mare.
