What tester Gillian McMurray says: I’m an Absorbine fan and these didn’t disappoint. Leather cleaner softens and supples leather and smells pleasant. The ‘Mitt’ is ingenious, with a multitude of uses – great for applying fly repellent to ponies who ‘take off’ on sight of an aerosol.

IV Horse Plaiting Gel

What the company says: A unique, non-aqueous formulation that offers maximum control and helps prevent plaits being shaken out – even at summer fly time. No sticky residue or ‘wet look’. 250ml - £6.25 www.4horse.co.uk

What tester Rachel Thomas says: Easy to use from a sensibly sized bottle that took up no space in the grooming kit and held plaits in very well. Obviously if you have a horse that rubs its plaits it doesn’t help much, but it is brilliant at holding plaits in - we sent a pony to a 3 day event and the plaits stayed in from leaving on the Tuesday, all through trot up and until dressage on the Thursday.

Garlic Horslyx

What the company says: Simple and cost effective method of feeding Garlic, whilst also offering a unique vitamin, mineral and trace element package, which provide multiple health benefits, in just one tub! 5kg and 15kg weatherproof tubs priced at £12.85 and £24.90 www.horslyx.com What tester Maria Phillips says: Fed to one horse who is normally very fussy about feed and additives, but he immediately started licking it and would not leave it alone! When he settled with it after a day or two, the lick lasted about one month and would be comparable in price to other supplements. He can be a bit stressy, so it did keep him occupied, but beware the stickiness!

Horze Grooming Set What the company says: Stylish set of wooden back brushes in black, in a nylon carry bag. Includes: body brush (large), body brush (medium), dandy brush, mane and tail brush, sisal glove and towel. £25.15 www.horze.co.uk What tester Claire Paisley says: Used every day on two horses for a month, this looks great and packs neatly into the small, wipe clean bag with good sized handles for easy carrying – even with lots of other things! I like the fact that although the bag is small and neat, there is room to add a hoof pick, mane comb, scissors and fly spray etc. A great product from Horze.

Pharma Summer Relief What the company says: Nourishing gel lotion to relieve itching skin and regular application supports the healing of injured skin Wonderful for summer dermatitis, itching tails or manes, horsefly bites and mud fever. Contains aromatic oils and the scent lasts more than 24 hours. 250ml - £ 23.35 www.horze.co.uk

What tester Pam Harrison says: The strong smell was something of a surprise, but applying this is easy and it persists on the skin, without being greasy. Flies haven’t been a big problem yet this summer, but on the odd bite we’ve seen, it seemed to reduce itching and scratching. Seems to deter evening midges in the stables too, which is a bonus! I’ll keep using it.

Equine Page 11

What tester Rachel Thomas says: The thinning comb was very good and worked really well on a 3yo who wouldn’t have her mane pulled – great. The mitt is good, although tends to fall off your hand in use, but it was effective and the bag it came in was very handy. The brush is nice to use, but for me, doesn’t get ground-in dirt off very easily.
