the next morning, our adventure had only begun. Soon we drove into heavy winds and rain. Barbara turned on the radio and immediately came the emergency warnings of tornadoes. As we pulled under an I-80 bridge, a twister crossed I-80 heading north. Trough the smear of rain on our windshield, we could see tree limbs fly past, and sheets of water flowing through the air sideways. Our trip to South Carolina and back on a southerly route

through the Deep South would take us to many beautiful places: the rolling hills of St. Joseph, Missouri; the brilliant, green pastures of Frankfort, Kentucky; the Las Vegas-like, clogged streets of Pigeon Forge, Tennessee (yes, we visited Dollywood); Te Cherokee Indian Reservation; the fountain-rich, historic neighborhoods of Charlotte, North Carolina; Charleston, South Carolina, and Fort Sumter; Memphis, Tennessee, and a tour of the swollen Mississippi River by paddle-wheeler; an RV park in Alma, Arkansas, where we awoke to find our way back to Interstate 40 blocked by the aſtermath of another tornado that had ripped up power poles (we took a detour over a two-lane country road); then winding back home through Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona to Utah.

What’s next? Barbara isn’t quite sold on the idea yet, but I’m thinking . . . the Alaska-Canada Highway. k
