Rick McKague spends his days immersed with RVs, whether that means helping customers fi nd a part, or changing out a stove burner on a 35-foot rig, all thanks to training he took at Okanagan College.

hours in the shop and he’ll have his Red Seal. “I love this work,” said McKague,

who also works in the parts department where the phone rings off the hook come spring and the line-up to the counter oſt en runs fi ve-deep all day long. ‘”It’s diff erent every day.” Okanagan College Instructor Jon

Itterman says students of all ages are attracted to the career, but the ones who get the most out of it are like McKague. One way or another they developed a

connection with recreational vehicles, either from a later in life adventure, or warm memories from childhood holidays spent touring the countryside. “T ere is something about RVs,”

Itterman said of the quintessentially North American urge to pick up and head out. Aſt er all, our forefathers crossed the continent in covered wagons. T e motorized RV of the 1920s kicked things up a notch, and before long RVs were so complex it took a trip to the shop to get that 35-footer back up and running.
