The Beringer Estate. Beringer Vineyards (Estd 1876) is at 2000 Main St, St. Helena, California.

mind that the Napa Valley is only one-eighth the size of the Bordeaux Region of France. In a blind wine tasting contest in 1976, Stags Leap Wine Cellars and Chateau Montelena beat the best French wines. T e Napa Valley and California wines were now on the world map. Touring the Napa Valley is easy, with the valley extending 5 x 35 miles (8 x 57 km).

Take the day and head north on Hwy 29 from Napa to fi nd the bulk of the wineries. Return to Napa by Hwy 101/12. On this trip of about 80 miles (120 km), you will pass through Yountville, Oakville, St. Helena, Calistoga, Greyserville, Healdsburg, Santa Rosa and Sonoma. Along the way you can visit wineries such as Robert Mondavi, Beringer, St. Clement, T e Castle (Castello di Amorosa), Freemark Abbey and Sterling Vineyards. With so many wineries to select from, pick only a few per day and sample their wines. You may be surprised to discover that wine tasting is no longer free. T e cost

ranges from a mere $3 per sample to $20 to walk through the door of some wineries. At Sterling Wineries, it cost $18 for the aerial tram (gondola), just to reach the winery. At the Castle, it will cost you $18 to tour the winery. It is a common practice to charge $18 - $20 for entry and the sampling of four wines. In Napa there are

numerous wine tasting rooms, which are far more reasonable. Check at the Visitor Center, as they can provide 2-for-1 free cards to selected wineries. What appealed to me was the Napa

Valley Wine Train, advertised as ‘T e Best of Your Wine Country Experience’. T e train consists of two Alco FPR engines pulling nine antique 1917 Pullman cars. T ere are three types of cars: lounge, observation (Dome Vista cars), and dining cars. T e cars have a Canadian connection, with the passenger cars once used by the CNR and Viva Rail. T ree kitchens can handle up to 315 people. T e trip takes three hours over 36 miles (58 km) from Napa to St. Helena/return. T e experience was a walk back in time to a period when train travel was special and passengers were served in fi rst class fashion.

T e train makes two trips a day for

lunch and dinner. Lunch choices are: 1. Vista Dome ..............$139.00 2. Gourmet Lunch........$109.00 3. Silverado Lunch .........$99.00

We selected the Gourmet Lunch. Lunch cost my wife Patti and myself $262
