he 2012 racing season represents the sixth season of action for the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series. In its first five seasons, Canada’s national stock car championship has grown into a truly national entity, celebrating the peak of Canadian motorsports. With a 12-race schedule, featuring seven oval races and five road course events, the championship offers a challenging mix of venues that will once again produce a ‘down to the wire’ title hunt contested by Canada’s most talented stock car racers. The champion will be the driver who is able to overcome adversity and the competition to secure the greatest number of top finishes on both the ovals and road races. This season’s NASCAR Canadian Tire Se- ries will attract teams from across Canada to compete in 12 events at 12 different tracks across six provinces. The slate includes many of the top racing facilities throughout Canada, with tracks and events familiar to the series. There are some changes, however, as the 2012 schedule will include a return of the Edmonton road course event, following a one-year hiatus. “The 2012 schedule has a great mix of
tracks that will deliver the exciting racing that our Canadian fans have become accus- tomed to,” said George Silbermann, NASCAR Vice-President, regional and tour- ing series. “Each year, with the help from our friends at Canadian Tire, this series con- tinues to grow and evolve. The 2012 season should be the best yet.” For the first time in series history, on May 20, the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series opened its season at the 2.459-mile Cana-
dian Tire Motorsport Park (formerly Mosport International Raceway) road course near Bowmanville, Ontario. Championship contender J.R. Fitzpatrick emerged victorious following a spirited battle with 2010 series champion DJ Kennington and two-time Canadian Tire Series title win- ners Scott Steckly and Andrew Ranger. That race was followed up, on June 3, by
the series’ second consecutive annual appear- ance at Circuit ICAR in Mirabel, Quebec. Home province favourite Andrew Ranger fought back from his 16th place starting posi- tion to take the lead – and the win – in front of Fitzpatrick, Steckly, 2011 Rookie of the Year Louis-Philippe Dumoulin and Kennington. The season’s first two races, at Canadian
Tire Motorsport Park and Circuit ICAR, were but a preview of what fans can expect all season long at ovals and road courses across the country.
Racing enthusiasts will also be anticipating the sixth consecutive appearance by the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series at Montreal’s legendary Circuit Gilles Villeneuve during the NASCAR Nationwide Series race weekend. The Saturday, August 18 event is popular with the fans, racers and sponsors, all of whom are eager to see Canada’s best drivers featured alongside of one of NASCAR’s major touring series. Additionally, in a pairing with the IZOD In- dyCar Series, the series returns to Edmonton, Alberta’s new 2.256-mile City Centre Airport course (on July 22). Joining the Edmonton event, the Canadian Tire Series’ annual swing through Western Canada includes two other stops: at Motoplex Speedway and Event Park in Vernon, British Columbia (on July 14) and

at Auto Clearing Motor Speedway in Saska- toon, Saskatchewan (on July 25). “Canadian Tire has been a proud sponsor of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series since 2006,” said Allan MacDonald, Senior Vice- President of Automotive for Canadian Tire. “It’s thrilling to see how the sport of racing has continued to grow over the years along- side the enthusiasm of Canadian racing fans. We’re looking forward to yet another exciting season on the track in 2012.”
As mentioned, the 2012 NASCAR Cana-
dian Tire Series features five road courses and seven oval events on the schedule. In addi- tion to the events mentioned above, the 12- race tour will also include the June 16 oval race at The Speedway at Canadian Tire Mo- torsport Park (near Bowmanville, Ontario), a June 23 date at London, Ontario’s Delaware Speedway, the popular Grand Prix de Trois- Rivières street circuit race (August 5 / Trois- Rivières, Quebec), and a hectic, three-race, season-ending string of oval races at Barrie Speedway (September 8 / Barrie, Ontario), Riverside International Speedway (September 15 / Antigonish, Nova Scotia) and the tradi- tional championship deciding event at Kawartha Speedway (September 22 / near Peterborough, Ontario).
The tour has been designed, by NASCAR, to offer an exciting and varied product to Canadian racing fans. With races at the coun- try’s top motorsports venues and racing events, the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series is creating a following among Canadian motor- sports enthusiasts.
