onship chances, there are a pair of former titleholders – Andrew Ranger and DJ Kennington – plus a handful of other serious con- tenders, who are not prepared to let him repeat without a fight. “I think that there will be four or five guys in the fight right to the very end,” continues Steckly. “It will be very, very tough to win this year. Andrew will be back full time, and we all know what he can do, especially on the road courses, but he’s strong on ovals, too. DJ is fast and always in the picture, and he’s smart enough to know that you have to finish, and finish well, in each race to have a shot. “There has never been a ques-
tion about JR’s (Fitzpatrick) speed, and he’s getting a little older, a little more patient, and he now knows what it takes to win a championship in this se- ries.” Steckly also recognizes that
there are a large number of ‘spoilers’ in the field, drivers not necessarily in the title chase, who could steal away a win on any one of the dozen venues. “You have to look at guys like Mark (Dilley) and (Pete) Shep-
herd, who are a threat to win on any oval. And Kerry (Micks) is just as strong on road courses. Jeff Lapcevich is another wild card, as are Steve Mathews and LP (Dumoulin). They can all be fac- tors and affect the points if they get hot.”
The unpredictability of motor- sports is the reason that the driv- ers keep coming back and the fans teeter on the edge of their seats. As Canada’s only profes- sional stock car racing series, the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series of- fers the opportunity for drivers to test themselves against a talented field of rivals, and to challenge, face and overcome any number of obstacles, whether incident-re- lated or mechanical, that might suddenly appear.
Summing up his outlook for another successful season, Steckly concludes, “I try not to over-think any race. We go into every race with a basic strategy, but once we hit the track, we just deal with things as they come.” With two championship notches already on his belt, and a third entirely possible, Steckly’s attitude and game plan seems to be working.
Scott Steckly and Andrew Ranger are both in a position to become the series’ first three-time champion.
