In 2003, 35,000 international students studied towards a coursework master’s, ten times more than the number studying for PhDs by research. Since 1910, Australia has been using distance education to reach students in remote areas of the country. Now, it is a world leader in distance education, online and e-learning. Australian courses are also offered in offshore campuses around the globe to those students who are unable to study abroad.
Graduate admissions and entry requirements Admissions requirements vary,
though in general for Masters courses at leading Australian universities a good bachelor’s degree in a related field and a strong academic track record will be required. For PhD courses, you will need strong academic credentials including a master’s degree in a related field. You will also be required to submit a research proposal outlining your intended area of research, the original contribution that your research will make to your field, and demonstrating the feasibility and suitability of your chosen topic.
Carmel Murphy offers the following advice for those thinking of applying to graduate courses in Australia: “Make sure the course or research area you would like to study is offered by the university. If you wish to do research, make sure you have a good idea of what you wish to research, prepare your research proposal carefully, and find an academic expert who is well placed to supervise you.”
Graduate scholarships and funding Australian universities receive generous government funding and
the cost of a degree down under is significantly lower than in the UK and USA, as are general living costs. There are a variety of scholarships available to graduate students, both from individual universities and independent bodies.
Visas and immigration
To study in Australia, you need to be granted a student visa. Visa applications differ depending on your country and level of study, though in general you will need to provide: •

• Proof that you have the required finances (A$12,000 a year for living costs)

In some cases you will need to demonstrate English language proficiency with an IELTS test score
